Rolling Guards / guard scraping solution

Postby gordon77 » Fri Dec 16, 2005 12:12 pm

hey i have just put some levin wheels with FM-901's (195/55/15) on my fx, when ever i go over a small bump the tyres hit the inner fold of the guard. its worse when you go over bump when turning. the car is lowered on kyb shocks and jamex progressive rate springs (50mm i think)

basically i love the way the car used to drive on the standard wheels. it wasnt rock hard all the time but when you gave it shit round a corner it tightened up and became very responsive. i would like to retain these springs but stop the tyre hitting the guard.

i thought about rolling the front guards but im not sure how it would look. the only other option i spose would be harder springs but then i loose the soft feel of the car round town which i like.

are there any other solutions to my problem??? does anyone have a pics of a 91 fxgt with the guards rolled???

mods: if this is should be in tech questions then feel free to move it :)

Is it hitting the quarter panel or the inner gaurd. Two seperate things.

If its hitting the inner gaurd, you have two options:
a) removing it (can cause large mess inside gaurds though)
b) cutting it where it is hitting (at the risk of having sharp edges)

If its hitting the quarter panel then you can have them rolled. It won't effect (affect, can't remember) the look of it as much as you are thinking it will.

Other option is to maybe see if you can get some 195/50/15's or some 185(190)/55/15's if possible. (Not sure of price or availability, but it is another option!)

yeah its hitting the quarter panel... where it folds under to connect to the inner plastic guard thingie. sharp edges are not a good one.

tyres are brand new (today) and i have been waiting for $&#$% ages for them so yeah - changing them is not really an option :D

How rangi do you want it done? Oops! I mean how much do you want to spend on rolling your guards?

I can do it for you if you want a cheap job! :D I will just bring my trusty guard roller ( a.k.a Mr Baseball bat ) to the next meet. And no I'm not going to bash your car with it! If you know what your doing, you can roll your guards up by fitting it between the tyre and the guard and drive forward and back a couple of times. It will smooth out the lip and fold the metal up into itself. But sometimes it has been known to crack/chip the paint....
...or you could pay someone to do it professionally..... about $120 :(

There's various guys that do it and most panel beaters can do it for you but try this guy:

Reagan @ Performance Guard Rolling Services : $60 per guard :? Ph (021) 293-5358

You maybe able to get a cheap price elsewhere... or there's always Mr Baseball Bat!

i had that prob wen i put my 17's on, i goty my front and erar guards rolled, and i could still hear it scraping in the rear, and then after trying everything and spending money, i saw a lil screw and nut sticking out, so i change it to a flatter smaller one and the noise was gone! it was just a bloody lil bolt under tha guard! so try a few lil things like that first

try doing some burnouts, not just will it take your tyres down a profile, but it will encourage the chance of you pulling guttersluts

lol i have figured out whats happening. its scraping because the right guard has been in an impact (it doesnt scrape on the left side),... only slighty but enough to push it back into the car. gunna pull it out today :)

and they are 55 profile :)
