Screeching from S/charger...

Postby peas » Sat Dec 17, 2005 7:09 am

My AE92 makes the worst noise when you get on the gas while the revs are fairly low. At around 3000rpm in 3rd you can hear a whining/screeching noise, I was wondering if this was the supercharger clutch on its way out? It's not really loud but very noticeable. The belt is fine, replaced not long ago so ruled that out. I am goin to get a boost guage on it today and see if it is reading what it should to maybe clear it up but has anyone experienced this?

I know you say the belt is fine, but have you rechecked the tension after runnung it for a week when it was new. its not uncommon a belt need retensioning

I would say without dout that belt slipping is your problem, there is very few reasons why the supercharger would be making whining/screeching noises, if it had no oil the noise would be heard all the time, however it could be you supercharger clutch slipping, but its not that common. How do you know that the noise is coming from the supercharger?? it could be from other belts which are slack.

The oil is fine. Clean and up to the level. I assume it is the supercharger as it tends to be synchronised with the green LED on the tacho. I will recheck the belt and maybe throw another one at it seing as they cost me next to nothing just to be sure.

Why dont you just tighten the sc belt? Thats what your problem will be. Takes all of about 5 mins. As typex said above, new belts tend to stretch and require retensioning after between 2-4 weeks. If your connecting up a boost gauge then you will see the boost drop when the screeching starts which indicates the belt is slipping
