Sanding Chrome to metal

Postby RE20 » Sun Dec 18, 2005 10:56 pm

Hello what would be the best way to sand down chrome to metal? Im actually planning on doing this to a BMX but Im sure its the same as mags etc. I guess the easy way would be to sandblast but Im not affraid of hard work and saving sum $ would be good. Also what sort of primer would I look at to put on before I paint? (just want to do a cheap matt black job).
Cheers for any suggestions!

Not if its going on bare metal, it'll rust

If you can get a hold of a sand blaster it'll make the job a lot quicker. After you've blasted it go hard with 100-200 grit to get it smoothish then a 400 to get it nice. Layer a coat of etch primer of a dark colour close to black (or just black if possible) and layer it with a matt black top coat. A cheap way of getting a matt surface is to hold the can further away from the painting surface.

theres quite afew etch primers on the market also which specify they can be painted over lightly scored chrome.
preperation is the key here really, you need to make sure you get a good key in the surface or nothing will bite in properly on chrome.
Cant believe im still a member here.

The logical way would be to take it to a metal chromer, they should be able to dip the frame in something to remove the chrome.
