I reckon you should make a fibreglass replacement panel :)
you could even make it removable so you could have all the weight savings of not having the sunroof, but the wicked-ness of an open roof in summer :)

so the water leaks in during winter? :P
its for the racecar
however i have heard that welding a roof can be damn ugly/expensive/time consuming....

welding it in will almost certainly cause the roof to buckle

I briefly owned a *shudder* ma61 race car (i only bought it for parts, promise), and it had a steel panel rivetted in place of the sunroof

anyway if it's for a racecar, I'd just go fibreglass or steel, but don't weld it in, just fix it with fibreglass

nonono
remove the entire sunroof assembly, then make a panel, to fill the gap, and secure it in place by fibreglassing around the edges

you could try welding a panel in, and just do lots of spot welds, taking your time to make sure you don't heat it too much to cause buckling.

If it was me, I would fibreglass it in, mostly because fibreglassing is something I know I could do without $&#$% it, but welding might cause problems

i think you will find there are rules for doing that for a race car.....
its been a while but i recall having this discussion before and its not as easy as just filling the hole....

check with MSNZ (or leon) doesnt cost to ask, but can cost to fix a f**k up

Heh ... he has already done exactly that :)

Nope, MSNZ rules barely mention sun roof's at all.

Do pretty much whatever the hell you like, so long as you present a neatly finished job without sharp eddes. I've seen all sorts of wierd and wonderful creations, none of which were dangerous. The strength in the roof becomes essentially irrelevant once you put a cage in the car.

That would be one cheap, easy and nasty fix :P I'd be more inclinedto look at the fibreglass option if you can, much nicer finish 8)

for the fibreglass route, id be concerned about cracking, and the associated leaking

im guessing tack/spot welding would also leave gaps and hence leak like a sieve

i can just 'steal' some of the roof from my wreck and slap that on top, or use an ali panel
including an arse load of sealer and 100's and 100's of rivets!

dad chopped up a roof that had no sunroof to begin with, cut out a piece the shape he needed, and used some kind of sealant/glue stuff to stick it in :?
worked pretty well but looks a bit rangi

good thing the new car has no sun roof and all the other light weight parts :D

nothing wrong with ma61s, but that was a pretty shoddy example you had

if your really serious, remove all the mecahnisms (8 bolts in my account) cut off all the extra metal tags. Spot weld in a metal sheet below the normal roof line, use urthane sealant around the inner edges, then fibreglass (with matt) the hole and bog to smooth it all off..

Many many hours of work.

Or go the easy route, cut off the rear half of the slider for it, and install the cage around the sun roof .. YEY

Why do you want to remove the sunroof?
- weight
- looks (sunroof a bit odd in a race car?)
- rollcage fitment

If you're not going to cage it straight away, keep the sunroof while you work through the options.
Yeah - what type of car did you end up with?

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!
