no its quite different.

and it kicks in quite low too..... fitting something like a vtec contorller will make it run worse. leave it stock, or fit a good ecu and go playing on a dyno 8)

Yes, some guy is always an extremely reliable source for all you need to know about cars.

i actually know a bit about cars, but as the vvt system is differnt to tvis im not to sure when it kicks in and the guy is actually some1 hu owns a blacktop levin so i assumed he knew wat he was talkin about, but bcuz mr revhead sed it comes on quite early im not sure as i feel teh tvis system would be better if it came in at 3 instead of at 4500

tvis is very differnt from vvt. so relateing how they behave to the other isnt accurate.

im sure of the exact change points on the blacktop, but on the silvertop once its abotu 1/4 warm it comes on at anything over a 1/4 throttle. its not rev dependant. thats why a vtec contoller would make it worse... as it would just switch at a set point, not the best place as the ecus sensor determine.
so unless youv got a flash ecu and can take the time to experiment with the settings its best just to leave it

I think its different in every car.. For the Skyline it's weird(VVL).
First gear, it kicks around 4,000rpm you feel it rush, but 2nd gear you dont feel it at all.

yes its cams but not what some people think it is!

v-tec is a 16 valve engine and always will be. vtec kicks in at a set rpm only!!. the intake cam looks alot like a 4age 20valve cam as both have the same amount of lobes 12 of them. so its 3 lobes per pot(-2 exaust) . however when vtec is off it uses the outer two like any normal 16valve engine. but when vtec is on it switches to the middle crazy lobe(higher lift and duration) so its like having three cam shafts in your engine.

blacktop VVT is nothing like vtec, its more to do with cam timing then anything else. it advances/retards(matt daimon) the cam timing. they are 20 valve engines so have more lobes but always uses them all.
vvt comes onto play only when the engine feels like it  right temp. throttle position, ect ect..
mivec (shrug shrug) i have no idea what the hell is going on in there  not really into them

opps for got to answer yor first question.yeah they are really good engines(waiting for the bash) take it for a spin and let the thing rev as high as it wants to go. they love to be taken very high and keep asking for more. they make about 145hp stock so its more then bluetop(stock). no to the vtec controler. say yes to safc2 is great for tuning. have fun

Bluetops make ~80-85kws at the wheels
Blacktops make ~95-100kw at the wheels

Can you take the blacktop one for a drive? That would be an easy way to see if the difference is worth your money.

I had a bluetop in my car...

Then i swapped it for a blacktop in the same car...

Both are standard, Blacktop goes ....

Bluetop does not..

Dont p1ss with the vvt either, unless you're removing it completely to get some super agressive cams and adjustable cam wheels

I've got an AE82 with a blacktop. You will never, ever regret buying that car :)

I sent someone on here a video of the AE82 vs a Honda Civic SiR ... not sure if he'll read this post or not, but if he does, I'm sure he'll tell ya what they can do.
