If I was doing one ( and I have been looking at it)

I would actually go for a 1JZGTE.
They are plenty powerful enough and way cheaper then the 2JZGTE.
On a Hilux a large single turbo conversion would be the way to go.
Not over huge Drag Racing type turbo but something mid range as the twin they come with are small and unreliable.

The hard thing will be a gearbox to suit.

S/C 3.8 buick from VN+ commodore. the adapters are available, reasonable power and a compact unit(V6 vs L6).

anything of this magnitude will require custom made mounts at the least,
and why the hell would you want to run the standard column shift navara manual with a rb26det

im doing a lexus v8 into a navara at the moment.
anything is possible, its only your budget that restricts it

2 or 4wd?

i put a 2JZGE into my LN130 Surf. Its the bees knees. 28mpg on the highway, 21mpg towing the boat to coromandel and back. I'm using a Haltexh E6X on it, 235HP, 285Nm. Enough power to scare alot of 'performance cars' on the road. Cruise around town at 50k's in 5th gear at 1250rpm.
That being said, I put it in with the intention of turboing it in the near future and I still plan on doing it. However for what it has cost me, ya couldn't find a more competent tow vehicle for under 8-10K

28mpg = 11.9km/L
21mpg = 8.9km/L

That's pretty good!
What about town driving?

i was going to put a 5mgeu in one with a w55 box, i thought it would make a good cheap conversion and the 2.8i would still tow the mint, i have all the hardware minus flywheel i think if anyone interested cos i dont have the time

Even better, the problem is I live only 3km from work, so i'm still running in warm up enrichment to and from work morning and night.
Most of the way to and from work i'm sitting on 50-55kph in 5th at 1250-1300rpm, I change gear around town at 2000rpm usually.

I doubt weather those figures would be possibly using the factory ecu. I tuned my E6X myself on a run in trip to auckland to watch Targa. Thru the low rpm zones, ie: below 3000rpm, at normal driving loads i'm sitting in 15-15.5:1. Under full load I'm at 13.2-13.8:1 . The beauty about owning a portable Wideband :)

I'm currently running the std 4.55:1 diffs, I reckon i could get 30mpg if i put 4.3's in it. but when towing I'd have to use 4th more so it's a gain in one book and a loss in the other. Also around town I'd probably have to use 4th.

if you are towing at the legal limit, you shouldn't be using 5th gear anyway, same with driving around town at 50-ish km/h. it's an overdriven gear, and should only be used when necessary. hell, i don't get out of 3rd in town and only click 5th when doing 110+

90kph in 5th towing on the flat is 2250rpm, it drives around town on the flat very happily at 1300rpm. Why should I not be in that gear? there is no point being in 3rd at over 2000rpm around town, nor being at around 2700-2800 in 4th towing.
