fx-gt brakes

Postby into_obscurity » Fri Dec 23, 2005 3:29 pm

hi there

i've just finished replacing the rear breakpads (disc) on my '86 fx-gt and now im having some trouble with the handbreak. i've taken the middle part out of the interior and tried to tighten the handbreak. but even at full adjustment it still doesnt keep the car still!

ive driven up and down the road a few times wearing the pads in but i dont think its making much of an impression on the pads, because when i break in the gravel i can hear the front wheels beginning to loose grip but not the rear. could anyone help me out here! is there another adjuster that will tighten it up? i dont want her rollin down a hill anytime soon! :D

cheers

Roll backwards and use the breaks, it should tighten them up.

i didnt bleed the brakes straight up. i did however loosen the valve so i wasnt up against the fluid when i was twisting the piston back in. ill try rolling backward and using them, and if that doesn't work looks like i'll have to bleed em!

cheers for the help :D

my handbrake was shite in my ae91 fx, so i loosened the cable right off and then pumped the brake pedal about 100 times... then lightly tightened it and it was all good.
When in doubt, down and out.

As above, I'd say you should bleed them. Ususally the rolling back adjusts them fine, but you mention you loosened the valve...how do you know you didnt let any air in?
Either way, its good practice to at least partially bleed every pad change as the calipers generally get all the dirty fluid in them. If you have never done in the ownership of the car I'd fully flush them with new fluid. dont forget, normal brake fluid is hydroscopic, so needs to be renewed every so often.
Cant believe im still a member here.
