Car overheating and code 22.

Postby Al » Tue Dec 27, 2005 5:24 pm

Coming back from Marlborough today I was almost in Kaiapoi and I noticed a strange noise like a kettle boiling coming from the engine bay 8O

Pulled over and steam for africa was coming out, it had popped the overflow cap off and it was out of water

Checked codes, got #22. Temp sensor signal. Got her home, filled it up with water and with the heater on full noise it sits nicely on half way. Water doesn't bubble so im assuming it isnt BHG...

Thermostat?

my BHG only showed itself when boosting - ie a 100km trip without giving it much gas didn't use a drop of water, but the same trip with occassional bits of boosting nearly emptied the whole system...

wouldn't hurt to check the t'stat though, much cheaper and easier to change :)

may as well replace ya rad cap while ya at it too.
if it emptied enough the temp sensor would be left dry hence the code.

Let the car sit for about 5 hours and went back to it.

Ok it must have really been out of water 8O Managed to sit with the hose for bloody ages filling it up again  Filled it to the brim and checked for leaks, no massive amounts of water leaking anywhere, sat the car idling in the garage for about 10 minutes while I filled it up. Put the radiator cap back on and took it for a 20 minute drive, bit of boost here and there, heater turned to cold and it just sat under half way and didnt move.

you want to run the car wit the heater on hot on idle with the radiator cap off until the fans come on to get rid of any air bubbles in the cooling system if u dont it can cause hot spots and pop the head gaskit
yea and id be looking at the thermostat take it out get some wire even a coathanger take the lid of a jug or boil sum water on te stove and hold it in there not touching the pot/jug sides and see if it opens properly
and also try a new radiator cap
