Peculiar Starting Problems

Postby Muzzie » Fri Jan 13, 2006 9:15 am

Left the Hiace sitting for a couple weeks, while I was on holiday.

Came back to a flat battery - which I sorta expected, so I charged it up and tried to start it, and got nothing.

Wasn't battery voltage either - headlights stayed on bright when attempting to start, but voltage did drop down slightly, so the switch has to be working.

However, despite the small volt drop it wouldn't click in the starter unless you held it on start for a few seconds, then it would suddenly pull in and start. It used to be fine, but with the occasional small delay (like a second at most), but after leaving it over the holidays it's now much worse.

What would be causing the delay between the switch and the starter?

Run a wire direct to the solenoid from the battery, if you have the same delay then the solenoid is probably on the way out.

could also be the starter brushes wearing out- they exibit the same problem often. easy enough dissasembly and resolder job to put new ones in and clean solenoid up if its ok.
