Supra front end pop

Postby cespenar » Wed Jan 25, 2006 1:02 pm

Hey I was just wondering if anybody would know what would cause a slight single pop noise on coming to a fairly hard stop and starting off fairly quickly from a standstill...It happens on my 96 supra but only sometimes and its not very loud...I did a bit of a search and came up with the possibility of something wrong with an engine mount, but it also sounds remarkabley similar to the knocking sound I got when the @#$%wits who "professionally" installed lowered springs on my old curren didn't tighten the strut nut properly, so maybe could be something to do with suspension assembly? If anyone has any ideas would be great thanks.

A 'pop' is fairly vague... I've had the odd strange sound from my ones, mostly caused by suspension componentry not done up tight...

No it's not a backfire-type pop, its fairly hard to describe I think its probably something to do with the suspension...sounds as if there is a pressure build up between a couple of metal components and then the pressure is suddenly released causing a bit of movement and the pop sound - if yoimagine a 2kg metal block on rails sliding along at maybe 5-10 km/h then hitting a metal stop at the end...thats probly the best I can do at describing it, but yeah, does sound a lot like something in the suspension...

Maybe one of your struts has a leak?

Best to really start finding out where/what the problem is, is to jack it up and start having a fiddle with the suspension bits.

If a strut has a leak you'll be able to see it if you look @ it...

Hmmm ok cool thanks...I've been meaning to jack it up for some time but I'm working away from home for a couple of months and don't have anything to jack it up with...the time will come though. When I bought it (bout 3/4 weeks ago) I got an AA check...would have thought if it were anything major they'd pick up on it...

I remember when I had what sounds like a similar noise, it was also as a result of having the shocks out. To remove the shocks in a JZA80 you must also disconnect the top A-arm from the suspension pickup point. There are two points that can create this noise after having the shocks out, one is the long pivot bolt on the inner end of the A-arm, and the other is the pinch-bolt at the bottom of the shock. If either of these aren't solidly tight, they will move slightly, and could quite possibly create the 'pop' that you describe.

Excellent sounds like that could be a distinct possibility as when the car was first imported 3 years ago it had its shocks replaced. I will have to check those bolts when I get back to the car at the end of the week, thanks alot
