Turbo Seals

Postby slighty_sykotic » Thu Feb 16, 2006 1:11 pm

Just rebuilt my motor, and got it running fine.

But I'm guessing my turbo seals are rooted, somehow.

The turbo was fine when it came off the car (GSR), I saw it for myself (mate's car).

Since then, its been away to evil_si to get the manifold made, but I doubt he did anthing to it, going to ask though on the off chance, and it was on the car when it was taken to the exhaust centre to get the dump pipe linked up.

The car is fine when you start it up for the first time, but then a few secs (maybe 10?) white smoke begins to drift out the exhaust, and if you rev it, it seems to blow a huge amount of it out the back.

Im asking if it can be anything else other than turbo seals? (i guess its better its turbo than the motor), and how can the seals be damaged in such a short space of time?

Its a gze motor.

Check if you have good oil return from turbo, also if your return pipe is above oil level and does not have any vertical S bends or kinks, if it is not blocked and if it is quiet fat (about 19mm is good size).
Also check if you crank case is properly ventilated and there is no blowby.

what's your oil drain like? a blocked oil drain can cause excessive pressure which causes the seals to leak. Also if your oil feed is too big or lacking a restrictor it can do the same.

you could also be burning coolant if it's white, have a sniff of the smoke and see if it smells sweet (coolant) or like oil

Theres oil in the exhaust, its def oil.

And that was my next question, there is no restrictor, and my return pipe has a vertical bend....

Hmm,

I can fix the bend easy, thats not problem, but should it have a sestrictor in place?

The td04 I have needs restrictor. Some turbos have them in the bearing housing but it appears the td04 doesnt.

At the moment the vent from the head is not joined into anything, its just vented to atmo. This is how my 20v always was, and I don't have a one way valve for it anyway, so I don't want to connect it to the throttle body, cause I don't think boost through the vent would be good....
