2nd gen 3SGTE Cams into Caldina 3SGTE?

Postby strx7 » Sat Feb 18, 2006 5:58 pm

I'm wanting to know if some aftermarket 264 degree cams for a ST185 will work in my GT-T engine. I know it wont fit the Cam Angle Sensor which is GREAT, if they fit it means i can run a ST185 dizzy for ignition pick up, since the GT-T sensors dont wanna talk to my Haltech E6K. If they'd work then i could just put a different rocker cover or modify the existing one so the dizzy would fit. I know the head has a cut out and bung where a dizzy could go.

Cheers

just to make it clearer, the caldina engine is an ST215 97-2000 type engine.

The cams themselves should be a straight fit, but you will have to use a different cam cover as IIRC the GT-T has no provision for the distributor, and I don't think there is any provision for attaching the distributor to the head. If that's the case you'll either have to do some machining or fit a Gen III head. For the sort of money that will cost you'd be better off ditching the Haltech and getting a real ECU ;)

IMHO going to a distributor and cam based timing triggers is a backwards step. Why people insist one using crappy systems like the E6K on a motor like the Gen IV 3S-GTE is beyond me

BTW Search is your friend this topic has been covered before ;)

the bolt provisions etc are all there.

WTF do i need to change the cam covers? the dizzy is at the other end of the head from the cam covers...........

The reason I'm using a E6K is cause its the ECU in my 13BT RX7 and I had a 2nd loom for it, and i'm never going to be runing my gravel car and my tarseal car at the same time so it makes sense to use 1 ECU for the 2 Cars. $500 for a 2nd loom is cheaper than any after market EFI system.

I did search, it only brought up two threads, one of which was this one. it depends what WORDS you use as to what it brings up. Asking questions on forums is my last resort, after spending at least an hour trying to find the info elsewhere using SEARCH and on search engines............

the idea of my GT4 is a reliable, quick gravel car so i can get points in the TMMC point table on gravel as well as tarseal. My entire vehicle expenditure including purchase cost, will only be approx the same as a Motec ECU...........

cam cover = valve cover = rocker cover etc etc. You're thinking cambelt cover

As AllFours has pointed out the cam cover is the one on the top of the head, which you mistakenly called a rocker cover... ain't no rockers in there, but there are a couple of cams ;)

Far enough, still a downgrade for the engine though, better off starting with a Gen III if you're going to lose one of the major advantages of the Gen IV engine.

Hmmm sometimes I wonder if I'm the only person that knows how to use a search engine  .

Try typing in "cams caldina 3sgte" click on "Search for all terms" and hit the button. All pretty logical really, but then again I make a lot of my living by being able to use a search engine to find useful stuff, so maybe it's only logical to me.

Really? Your whole project is costing you less than $3500?? Because that's what it would cost me to install a M400 in a Caldina and that's using a Plug & Play loom, would be less if I was to wire it in.
