More N/A Power

Postby cespenar » Mon Feb 20, 2006 11:26 am

OK so I was just wondering what people think the best things to do to a 2JZ-GE to get a bit more power are. Without turboing it. I've done a few searches, and a lot of the stuff I have found is turbo-related, so is there anything worth doing and fairly cost effective to get a bit more power out of the old N/A 2JZ? It's getting an Apexi power air filter and I'll probably do a cold air box to go with it but that's it at the moment...

Exhaust, some head work, cams and ECU.

After that I'd probably start looking at a Turbo. To be honest for the money you are going to spend on it doing the above it'll be easier to just turbo it.

Or alternatively get a 1J Head with Turbos and manifold and slap that on the 2J block.

Yeah that's what I thought since nearly all of the literature out there is with regard to turbo'd 2JZs, but a turbo will need to wait, I'm just a poor student lol need a job before I can look at too many mods + the extra fuel consumption & insurance that comes with it... Cheers tho

Nitrous kit - you can take it with you to your next car, and the 2JZ can handle a decent boost piece of piss.

except if he's a uni student, he'll get a couple of minutes of fast from the filled bottle he gets with the kit, then wont be able to afford a refill for 4 months :D

As opposed to the petrol bill a supra would be returning? They aren't exactly petrol misers

Just an idea though, appeals to me for the "only when you need it" aspect of things.

Haha yeah I did consider a nitrous system I suppose I need to check on prices and the various ways of setting it up (theres like direct port and something else isn't there?), I've seen pics on the net and I'm sure it will have been done lots before...although as All_Fours says; I am a uni student and it probably would be 2 minutes of fast every four months, the petrol bill alone keeps me light pocketed, although it's no worse than I expected - does about 500km/70L tank round town, goes up to about 650km/70L tank open road.

IIRC, I worked out the cost vs duration of a Nitrous system a couple of years ago and worked out that with a 50-75hp shot, you would get about 2-3 minutes on Nitrous from a 10lb bottle, and the cost of refilling said bottle was around $120.

depends on the set up - I can get 27mpg on a trip in my 2JZGE powered Surf, even towing the boat I haven't gotten less than 21mpg.....

I personally believe the 2JZGE would have to be THE MOST UNDERRATED engine you'd ever find.
