St215 Caldina - Frozen dials on dash????

Postby steve74 » Mon Feb 20, 2006 12:21 pm

This is the second time this has happened in the last 9 months and only seems to happen on long trips but not every time. only lasts about a minute then opperates normally again.

the speedo and rev counter lock in the one position and the odometer just shows two lines like this

odo _ _

is this simply a loose plug somewhere?
any one else experienced it?

Its happened to me twice before! It threw up an error code 42.

42 Vehicle Speed Sensor Signal
Diagnosis

* No "SPD" signal to ECU for 8 seconds when engine speed is between 2,500RPM and 4,500RPM (7M-GE) or 4,000RPM (7M-GTE) and coolant temp is below 80°C(176°F) and neutral start switch is off.

Trouble Area

* Vehicle speed sensor circuit
* Vehicle speed sensor
* ECU

I think this would affect the odometer.
I pulled over and reset the ignition and all was fine again.
I reset the ECU and have not seen this error code again.

Did it happen while she was still warming up?

the first time it happened was between nelson and blenhiem, i stopped to get a drink at the servo and got 100m down the road and noticed i had no guages. i turned the engine off and restarted and it was fine.

on the weekend i was heading to hanmer springs and about 1.5 hrs of driving at a slightly naughty speed of 110kph, i got stck doing about 80 behind a camper van and thats when i noticed that the speedo was still doing 100k and the rev counter wasnt working. i was about to pull over and it came right again???

weird?

anyway of checking for a current or previous fault code?

Hmmm that is a weird one.

This may sound strange but is it only happening on long trips on hot days? Just wondering if it’s a case of things getting warm, moving around and maybe there is a lose connection/wire somewhere that’s causing it.

Long shot I know but is possible

yeah both days were stinking hot, and yes after driving for over an hour at 100-120kph

i thought that mayde something was just getting hot and resetting to cool off. i was just keen to sort it out before it died alltogeather in the middle of nowhere. good to see its not an isolated thing tho.

sticking dials

Postby cynakyl » Thu Feb 23, 2006 12:06 am

i got this prob today. Noticed it after driving to my gfriends house about 10 min from my place. Fine on the way there. Got back into car and they didnt work at all. Got to my mum's place 2km up the road, pulled guage cluster out, checked plugs and problem was fixed. So dunno what it was but very disconcerting.
