the early hilux(1985-89, 5 stud) diffs are 1420mm wide. i have a surf (6 stud) for sale, its 1470mm wide. measure your one to see how wide. then you just cut mounts off original diff and weld on the new diff. mod driveshaft, normaly will need shortning slightly and new end for diff, and sweet as.

Then add, rear brakes. If you go disks, a calliper mount, rotors, calippers, brake lines, handbrake cables. If you go drums, the bolt pattern rotated around 2cm to clear the chassis rail, shortened handbrake cables and a bracket to hold them. A new pair of U bolts, modif the shock mounts.

Not only that but your wheels will stick out about 20mm at least, KE3X width is just under 1390. And youve got 2 or 4 studs too many.

Not just cut/weld and bolt in.

what about 4-stud Liteace van diff?? never measured one, but should be strong enough and relatively easy to convert to disc.

an ae86 diff will fit in without needing to be shortened. you will just have limited choice of mags though. I can't remember exactly how much wider they are than standard ke36 diffs now though.

how soon are you wanting a diff? I may have a hilux diff, ready to mount up to a ke30/5/6. I don't think it is shortened though; and it won't be for another couple of months that I know whether I keep it and sell it with my 35 or separately.

Lite-ace diff is about 1410mm, it still sticks out further than stock, which is pretty half arse IMO. And LSD heads are not made factory for them, and youre not cool if you dont have an LSD these days. There are other options, but none that are the right width and require very little or no modification. If there was, think about the amount of people trying do a 'Diff Upgrade' on the cheap, someone would have come across it by now and everyone would be doing it.

Myself ive spent HOURS walking around wreckers and PAP with my tape measure, and best option I came up with to do it properly was modified hilux.

If ya do find something that is the right width, good on ya but someone creating a new thread every week about it isnt going to help that happen any faster.

one way to get around the wider diff is to run fwd offset wheels with spacer/adaptors on the front. or one option is, put mr2 aw11 front struts in, i did that in my ke20. and had a corona 'f' series diff. and had fwd wheels alround and under guards
