Broken Blacktop???

Postby boxxy » Fri Feb 24, 2006 7:21 pm

Hmmm

well today i went to go to work, hoped in car (ae11 corolla gt - it was warm had been out like 5 mins b4) started it and it made this really "neat" noise.

it went..

Rumble Rumble Whip Whip lots of rattly noise, thump and stopped

it almost sounded like my exhaust sheild had broked another bolt and was rattling on the pipe... but 50 x louder and the floor of the car kinda shook.

next step... i get out thinkin oh dear.. look under neath an in engine bay., check oil its still there so i go to start car again and all i get is a loud thuk of the starter engaging, but no turn over?? its like the motor has locked solid so i think... 93000kms it must be broken cambelt. pull cover off this evening and theres a cambelt, whole and still tight.

any ideas?

It is possible, that your cam belt may Have stripped at the bottom. I know you said it has tenson on it, but that can still be the case with a stripped cam belt. It could also be your fly wheel. Best thing to de right now. Jack up the car. take off Drivers side front wheel, remove the cover and see if you can turn the motor over by hand. in either direction. If you find you can only turn it in the opposite directon to the usual rotation, then you have valve problems. Might be easer to reomve the spark plugs to, as this will remove any compression that can make it hard to turn over.

Its alway hard to determin a problem simply off the ifo you have given....
but yeah, it could e your fly wheel has sheared off some bolts, or your pressure plate has stuffed out, or the springs on your clutch plate have become dislodged, or, maybe your thrust bearing has seazed. did it make these noises straight when you started it, or when you put it in gear and started driving?

If the starter is engaging but not turning the engine over then its either a starter problem, not enough power, or you have siezed the engine. My guess by the sounds you mentioned, and the propencity for the blacktop to do so, is that its dropped a rod and wedged it somewhere rather than ventilating the crankcase.

Where are you living?... The Tron = Hamilton? Thought you used to be in Christchurch?

If you are in Hamilton I/We can come and have a look at your car for you.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

hmm.. well today we had a proper look.

cam timing is stil aok, as is cambelt.
starter is engaging / disengaging ok
pulled sparkplugs and lookd down the hole - all pistons are were they should be - its at tdc and outside 2 were at the top and inside 2 were down and there was no "odd looking" bits in there (thought it may have dropped a valve)
put power bar on crankpully, Cant turn either way.
put car in 6th gear and rocked on the ground, all that happens in the motor moves to the extremes of the mounts with absolutly no movement in the cam gear / belt (had rocker cover off for a look).

next one... kinda dodgy but...
rolled the car along and droped the clutch in 1st... stops very rather suddenly.

and yes kindloud, im in hamilton now :)

iv seen a button clutch fail and jam between the ring gear and bellhousing.....

however as you can move it while in neutral (if i read that right) id say its in the gearbox

Hmmm.

so the gearbox all turns ok with the clutch in so the internals of the box must be ok,
The Engine turns over by hand ok...

Tried to start it with the clutch in?
