4age piston skirt

Postby Caveman » Sun Mar 19, 2006 4:43 pm

Hi

Ive got a high k's 4age I want to race, im replacing the bottom/main end bearings but wondering if its worth doing the pistons too, do the piston skirts wear against the bore? or is it just ring interface? Just trying to get a little ahead before I pull the block down. Its a bit noisey, sounds a little like piston slap right now.

Its a smallport 4age.

Thanks

Does it smoke a lot and does it have low compression?
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

No smoke, uses sweet fark all oil, infact from oil change to oil change I dont need to top it up. 6 months between.

Its just noisey as a mofo  Sounds like metal to metal pinging 90% of the time, just really quite, not like detonation.

Ill do a compression test tomorrow, im lazy havn't got round to it.

I suppose that you could probably measure the pistons with some really accurate gear, to see if they've tapered or ovaled etc?

IIRC, the bores of an engine become slightly ovaled over time, because most of the forces are acting on two opposite sides of the bore.

If that were the case, you'd want to get it overbored anyway, and new pistons to suit. 8)
