MR2 Door Lock with Cobra Alarm - "teh br0k3N!!1!one&quo

Postby harmony » Mon May 01, 2006 12:40 pm

Hi guys.

Been away a while :) Recently got a 1998 MR2 GT, having some fun with that as you'd expect.

What I'm not having fun with is a recent alarm install, it's a Cobra with dual immobiliser, sonic sensors, yada yada. The issue is that it will never unlock, only lock (but it will always disarm, it just won't trigger the door unlock).

The car has a Toyota keyless entry thing, with a fancy key with a single button on it that triggers both locking and unlocking. The Cobra remote has a single lock/unlock button as well.

When the Car Stereo Company installed it, they said it was "intermittently" not working and a Toyota fault. This is quite clearly not true as it never works, and the Toyota key still works fine (although obviously won't disarm the alarm).

Why I'm posting is that the car's going back to be looked at by them tomorrow. I'd like some thoughts on what you think it might be, be it a fault in the internal system or where the hookup with the Cobra alarm might be at fault. The engineer in me thinks that it's unlikely that there's a fault in the car itself since the stock key works fine, and that they should just be using the same system to make it work.

Thoughts?

Hmmm my gutt feel going by the info posted is that it lays within the install of the alarm, given the fact all was working fine before hand and it isn't now, I'm no alarm expert but seeing as thats the only new variable in the equation I would have to go with that.

Could it be a possibility that the alarm and original locking system are just not compatible with each other and causing a conflict ?

That's my guess, it's good to get external confirmation that I'm not going mad :) My hit pick is that the Toyota bits work fine, and that there's been an error with the install (incompatability, incorrect install, broken system, whatever). I just don't know what could cause it as I don't know how either the Cobra or Toyota keyless systems work.

Where's fivebob when you need him :)

cobra alarms work with the toyota ones, which is why we sell cobra alarms...

does sound like an instalation issue.
unless it is a certain model than doesnt work with toyotas

The central locking has a control unit, this is a factory item, the alarm uses this same unit to open/close the doors. If it still locks and unlocks with your key then the system is fine.

The problem will most likey be the connection from the alarm to the unlock circut.

As for it being "toyotas" problem I doubt that your car will be different to any other toyota, they should all be negitive triggered central locking.

(I've never installed an alarm into an mr2 but every other toyota i've seen or played with have been negitive triggered.)

EDIT: Just read that you car has one button on the key for both lock and unlock, I've got no experence with a car like that so what I said may not apply

I demand pics immediately! :P

What colour is it BTW?
Is it a genuine GT? or a converted NA?

IIRC there's only 2 genuine turbo gen 5 SW20s in the country.

it does not matter if one button or two, it is flip flop trigger wich toggles between lock/unlock in remote control box.
One problem I had when installed an alarm into GX90, that the unlock signal was digital (5V square), so I had to use external relays bypassing multiplexor box when alaram was activated, and it was setup this way that when alarm not locking/unlocking the relays where passing through the power to locks (so the key remote and lock activated central locking)...

Well they sorted it :) They didn't say exactly what they did but they managed to resolve the problem without new Toyota parts, which lends credence to the incorrect install or faulty Cobra system theories.

All's well that ends well.

To answer earlier questions, it is a NA conversion, replete with adjustable fin and Recaros. I'll sort out some pics shortly, I need to get my digital camera fixed.

Well there were pretty good odds of it being that one. :P

There are 11 gen 5 SW20s in the country:

2 genuine turbo (unknown)

1 black manual NA with 20,000kms on the clock

1 burnt orange manual NA, belonged to a guy in gisbourne, now owned by a guy in wellington

1 burnt orange auto NA for sale in AKL somewhere on a car yard

1 red manual NA on trademe for too much $$

1 white NA converted to turbo (recently sold to someone in wellington)

1 silver manual NA in wellington

And... 3 that are unaccounted for, as far as my stalking goes.
Hmmm I think I might know of one more that I saw somewhere I think it was another orange one? But it doesnt spring to mind right now.

So the odds were pretty well in my favour really. :P

I suppose it's also worth mentioning that I've got the old NA motor from his car. ;)
