3SGE power output, Is the Auto 'different' or detuned?

Postby RomanV » Tue May 16, 2006 8:16 pm

Checking out that great link in the tech forum with all of the engines listed, I found something interesting.

Originally, I thought that the gen 4 3SGE had 200hp for the M/T car, with max torque higher up, and the auto version had 10hp less, but made max torque at a lower RPM (courtesy of revised cams/head design etc?)
As the auto is less likely to be lingering in the higher rpms, and the longer gears of the auto box could use a bit more torque than high end power.

This is exactly what happens with the Altezzas, as below:

3S-GE 200@7000 159@4800 (Auto5spd)
3S-GE 210@7600 159@6400 (manual)

As you can see, the manual version and auto make identical torque figures, at different RPMs to suit the transmission.

I also have confirmation that the head designs are different, different valves, different cams.

So I assumed that this was also the case with the FWD beams engine too, as it again makes 10hp less when fitted to an auto box.
However, the figures seem strange:

3S-GE 190@7000 152@6000 (auto)
3S-GE 200@7000 152@6000 (manual)

As you can see, they both make the same torque at the same RPM, yet the auto version makes 10hp less.

Is this likely to be a physical difference in the engine, or is it perhaps detuned with the computer etc?
I was thinking (hoping :P) That the auto ECU pulls back the timing/fuel at high RPM, as perhaps the auto box is intolerant of high rpms.
Bearing in mind that these engines use a different gearbox to the altezzas, as they are a 4 speed transaxle.

If this is indeed the case, then changing to the M/T ECU should gain you back the 10hp that you didnt get.
So that's a pretty easy 10hp, assuming it is true, and you can find an M/T ECU for one.

Do any other toyotas do the same thing perhaps?
Or are there likely to be physical differences between the engines?
*crosses fingers for detuning*

Mr Revhead or any other toyota parts person should be able to answer this one in no time.. supply him with achassis code and chassis number etc for the engine in question and he can look at the cam part numbers, hit the match off button and see if different part numbers are listed for auto and manual.

I'd do it for ya but i dont have the my EPC disks here, and i'm not sure if mine is up to date enough.
