Broken Crank

Postby Steve123 » Tue May 23, 2006 2:38 am

I took a 4th gen 3sgte appart today to find the crank broken! I couldn't believe it. Its a forged crank and the car is standard, done only 80k. Im just wondering if this is common?

Haven't seen that before, even with a couple that have put rods out the side of the block the cranks have been ok.

What were you doing when it broke?! I too have seen rods welded to cranks, sticking out of blocks, even snapped cams, but a crank?

Its not uncommon for four cylinders to break cranks if run at the resonant frequency for extended periods apparently, and removal of the harmonic balancer (built into standard crank pulley) will rapidly accelerate the problem. Also lightened flywheels accelerate the problem.

I know of one 20v 4age in a targa car that snapped a crank straight thru a main journal. then again that was running 200+ NA hp (or so the owners mates brother-in-law told me ;) )
