Brake upgrade for AE92...

Postby peas » Wed May 24, 2006 11:48 am

WIth some extra ponies going in I thought it might be good to look at braking as well. I know that the AE101 come out with twin pots on some models... is it worth converting to these? Do they bolt straight on? What has everyone else done in this area?

Not sure how many more ponies you now have in the corral, but in my club car, I simply upgraded to Mintex 1166 pads, and put new discs all around, along with new brake fluid.

I've had the discs glowing red hot, and the entire car surrounded in burning brake smoke, and haven't had any fade out of them.

I found this upgrade a simple and cost effective solution, that required minimal work, no certification. The downsides are that the Mintex pads can be quite noisy, they are VERY dirty (black wheels all the time), and they have been very hard on front discs. I warped my discs after only a year.

Bear in mind though, this is a car used in competition, so you may find different results.

My AE92 FXGT rally car is running standard discs and calipers with (old!) metal king pads, it stops on a dime and I didn't have any hint of fade, even after caning it on a very twisty 8.5km Rallysprint on the weekend :D As Leon says just put in some decent pads and fluid (remembering there are better pads than metal kings that I'm using, like those Mintexes) and you'll be laughing.
We know that four-wheel drive doesn't work in a racing car, and I proved to myself that it doesn't work very well for rallycross. I'm absolutely convinced that it has no future in rallying, either, even if the regulations allowed it. - Roger Clark (rallying legend), circa 1976

I cooked metal kings at Manfeild in two laps in my car :) Much was the brake fade and the bad smells. Then into the bin went the metal kings. They've worked perfectly well in a couple of previous cars, but they were just tragic in my AE92. Maybe the discs were getting a bit too thin or something.

Metal King Plus are all that I use on the MR2 AW racecar. Never had a problem yet in about 5 years of racing. As Leon said, pads and fluid is all you need. I've also removed the backing plates to let in more air and the open four spoke mags probably help a bit too.
See ya

Ive just completed AE101 single piston to 2 pot conversion...

Costs =

$250 for bits off a super-strut (inc rotors I didnt use)
$40 to machine 2mm of the face of the caliper bracket as it doesnt sit in the center of the rotor + (machine 'arch' so it will bolt up)
$400 odd on new rotors + free machining at work (id hole 54mm --> 55mm, od 275 --> 261 mm)
$350 mintex pads
$80 custom brake lines (std ones from both cars didnt fit, I almost found a Honda brake hose that would do the job)

So thats over $1000, I havent tested it on the track but I will in 2 weeks at Taupo =).

On my other 101 (road car)

$400 slotted rotors (+machine id 54mm --> 55mm)
$?? Lucas Brake pads.
This seems to be a good solution and all my friends with corollas love em, other friends almost go through the front window screen.

BTW I use Castrol Super Response Brake fluid (grey bottle at BP), as I was told this is the best before you pay stupid prices for brake fluid.

my AE92 now has twinpot AE111 SS calipers on the front, using the standard AE92 rotors - had to attack the carrier with the grinder to get to fit,
fitted AE111 rotors and calipers on the rear.
no idea how this will work as the cars not running yet

Sweet might just invest in some decent pads then and a new set of rotors... they are cheap enough. The fluid will be changed when I swap the engine to the new body anyway.

fwiw I worked out that I could go through three sets of standard rotors for the price of one set of slotted. Depends what prices you can get really.

As I say, the mintex pads can be very hard on rotors on the track.

I would of used the bigger disc off teh superstrut as well as using the 2 pot caliper, just machine up an adapter bracket so it bolts to the hub nicely.

Even at mates rates through BNT the slotted were triple the price of standard jobs. Because obviously the price for standard ones got way cheaper too.

My slotted rotors on the MR2 were about the same price as new genuine from Warwick ;) Repco staff cost FTW
