st185 gt four celica issues

Postby YeMs » Wed May 24, 2006 11:41 pm

woot woot, id like to welcome yet another toyota into our family. my youngest brother has just purchased a st185 gt four celica. it is.. well not thee tidiest example but is in reasonably condition considering it cost nearly nothing.

how ever, the car came with a brand new wof, yet after going for a short drive in it iv found a few problems.

i just wanted to know if there are any .. well hereditary diseases with these cars. common problems which show up. it sounds like the rear universal, or diff mounts are work as there is a clunking sound. also in the right front it sounds like either a ball joint or control arm bush has worn causing small knocking. also the speedo has stopped working, im assuming the cable has broken/come loose.

the car goes well, boosts fine and drives nice. once these problems are corrected he will look into further modifying.

filter and exhaust will b first on the list. next is intercooler, most likely to be a front mount.

are there any more common problems, specifically engine related at all?

cheers big ears.. and the rest ;)

Yeah, I think the rear diff mount is a common issue, have a search and see.

As Brad said, seems to be a commonish problem with the rear diff mount. I cant remember, but im pretty sure the speedo is also electronic not cable, so problem lies either within the speedo sensor or most likely the speedo cluster.

Hey just got one of these cars and had to rebuild it

I suggest you check the cooling system, the top and bottom tanks of the raidator, i had both of mine blow, first the top one then the bottom one blew on me. I basically replaced the entire cooling system, water pump and all, hoses, cap etc..

Also depending on kms i would check out the hanger bearings, i have new ones in mine, as well as what the others said about the diff, which is a good point and i will check that out this weekend.

What does the temp gauge sit on? about 1 inch under half?

I had bad cooling system which let to engine problems for me hence the rebuild.

Yep, worn rear diff mounts are common. Try to get all bushes replaced at the same time if you can. Highly recommend a compression and / or leak down test too (especially before further modifications). Better safe than sorry.
