Squeal from Belt - Caldina GT-T

Postby WanaGo » Tue May 30, 2006 9:37 pm

Hey,

Today something in the engine bay started squealing - when you start moving it starts, a major eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee but once you get moving, maybe 20km/h it stops. doesnt do it if you go slow to like 5km/h and start again, only does it from a standing start.
Its deffinitely a belt I think.
The thing I dont know, does it indicate worn belt/roller/etc or just a loose one? And which one would it be, and how do I tighten it (assuming its loose).

Its so loud its embarrasing.

EDIT: Ill be buggered if I can see any form of adjusting screw etc. Looking into the engine bay of this thing is crazy - so much more complex and packed in compared to my 95 Nissan Pulsar. I had to ask where the damn spark plugs were, as they are invisible too!
If someone knows, please tell me.

Oh - and is a Timing belt the cam belt? Stupid question I know, but again my Nissan Pulsar has a Cam chain, so Ive never needed to have one changed. Timing belt was done 1 year ago, at 91000km. Is that normal?

Thanks

Yeah, timing belt is the cam belt.

And normally do them about 80,000. (well i do), I thk the specs say to do at least every 100,000?

The belts will have idler pullys on them probably, you lose the pullies from the side, and then screw up from the top/bottom to tighten/lossen.

Maybe someone can show you pics? (havn't got my cam here).

OOOOOOOOOooooor, you could be rangi and buy a can of belt-stop-squeel. Worked for me once when i was being lazy :)

Roger that, thanks.

How the hell do you reach the idler! That engine bay is cram packed full of stuff!

Going out to have another look.

If you take the wheel off you should be able to lossen it, and then with mine i need about 3 or 4 socket extenstions to reach the bolt head from the top...

Or it may be a bearing/waterpump noise. Or just a belt. Pay to get it checked out however

Holy crap the nut on the end of the idler is like f**king tight. I cant get it off with my crap tools and limited space. I removed the window washer bottle/radiator overflow and managed to get to the nut, but for f**ks sake, I cant undo it. I managed to tighten the idler bolt up a little bit, which actually made a tiny bit of difference. Only a slight hint of a squeel trying to get out.
I cant get that damn nut off though. Have been trying since my last post!

Have to take in for an oil change, so might get Toyota to look at it then.

Oh - totally unrelated, but the car idles smooth, but every now and then it gets a sort of.... hickup, for like 1 fire.... then smooth again.... then a hickup.... then smooth. What could this indicate? Plugs need replacing?

Cheers

You don't want the nut to come off.. And you are talking about the one in the middle of the wheel ay? (hortiznal..).

I had that nut and then the ilder pully come off on my trueno once...thats not fun....

Might need a power bar to get it off.

yeah tried to loosen the horozontal nut in the centre of the idler wheel. It wont budge. I dont have a bar, and only shit tool set. The adjuster bolt for moving it (only has 1 by the looks of it) moved a few turns tighter, belt a bit tighter now, but didnt want to turn any more without loosening idler. Didnt try to take it off, just crack it so its loose.

Yeah, don't move it any more if you can't undo that bolt... (lol, been there too). You will smash ethier the bolt or the casting.

Might have to invest in a bar :D

Or, if you have proven that it's the belt, then maybe the combo of you tightening it that little bit and a spray with belt stop might fix it?

And why your down there...check the belts for cracks etc.

Thanks

Absolutely totally unrelated....
Just figuring out approximate money that has been spent on petrol for my old car.
149,000km
Average about 520km/Tank
Tank is 60L, would fill at about 55L
So 520km/55L
that makes 9.45km/L or 0.10576L/Km
so that means its used approximately 15,760L in 149,000Km
At an average of say $1.40 per L petrol (over its life, very very approximate), that means about $22,000 has been spent on petrol.

$&#$% a chicken

My mates Caldina does exactly the same thing. Like a air leaking sound.
In short, check plugs and coil packs.
