96 Levin Airbag

Postby astrae » Tue Jun 20, 2006 6:58 pm

Hi,

Had the Levin for a year and a half. Had to get a quick warrent so went to vtnz...

They've failed my because my airbag light doesn't come on.

Now I was under the impression in this car is that the only time the light comes on is when the airbag is disconnected or there is a problem.

THe car has been through several warrents without a problem in the past, the airbag light has never come on.

any thoughts?

96 Levin BZ-G, non facelift model, single driver airbag, non-superstrut.

They asked me to go to Toyota and get a letter. They then said "Toyota hate us because we send people down for things like this all the time"....

I went down to toyota and they basically said F*cken VTNZ... a tech popped off a cover on the steering wheel and worked it out after 20 seconds.

They printed out a letter and sent me on my way. The letter says "The vehicle has still got a mechanical type airbag and no warning lights"

The reason I went to VTNZ was because I wanted a strict test because something was left off my cert plate and I wanted some evidence to take back to the certifier. I failed on that and on the airbag...

I'll never be going back to VTNZ again....

While I'm having a bit of a bitch about VTNZ there is one other thing they said that pissed me off.

The reason I went there was because my 5mm rear wheel spacers never went on my cert plate when the suspension was certed 2 months ago (plate makers stuff up) Things have been taking a while so I thought id get a quick warrent (never again..) to hurry them up a bit.

3 goof balls at vtnz all agreed that wheel spacers could not be certed and i'd have to take them off...

Well my new plate thats arriving on Monday has got them on it....

sorry to dredge up an old thread, but thanks for the info, haha i failed my WoF for no airbag light too. Cheers!

Just to confirm, my dash has an airbag light on it, but it won't work, is that correct? (just triple checking)

Does you car have one or two airbags?

A AE111 Levin/Trueno with only one airbag is a mechanical one and does not have a airbag light at all on the dash.

Sounds like you have a two airbags in your car.

Actually I came across this the other day...yes, the cars do have a spot on the dash for an airbag light, but removing the dash reveals no wire actually going to the plug to make it light up, funnily enough being mechanical. The car was a 96 AE111 with 4AFE, single airbag

thanks for the reply mate, I wont deny the fact Im pretty dumb, but the light im referring too that IS on the dash is a figure with a seatbelt around him with a circle in front...i can only assume the airbag is the circle therefor being an airbag light.

However the car does indeed only have one airbag

Not sure if its any interest, but its a 111 prefacelift trueno (1996)

Guess I didn't look hard enough behind the dash when I was checking to see if the bulb had blown haha.

as soon as they mentioned the airbag i thought oh crap, this is going to cost. My wallet thanks you both for your time haha

Not a 100% true, it maybe the case for that car, was it a station wagon? perhaps its a 4AFE thing? I own two AE111 BZG's both preface-lift both with single airbags and both the dash clusters do not have an airbag light what so ever, no spare spot or anything.

Yeah the change over to 2 airbags will have been at the facelift, so anything thats prefacelift should be fine. Sounds like a seatbelt light maybe, mine has one too but never seen it light up. No sign of a airbag on my bzg / gfs 4afe. Wheres the light Brad?

Sounds like an interesting combo of a setup your car has

Nope, coupe. The cut out in the dash is at the lower left hand side of the dash cluster, and there is actually a bulb there to light it up. Just nothing in the loom to take current to it

Every warrant person I spoke to at the time said they have to be, plus the certifer said they had to be, he did cert them when the car went in, they just got missed off the plate,

plus in the law it states

Section 3 Modification and repair wrote:
3.1(3) The fitting of wheel spacers to a vehicle is a modification that requires certification, unless the vehicle, wheel or axle manufacturer approves their use for a particular vehicle.

and from the LVVTA

205-00(00) Wheels and Tyres wrote:
2.5 Wheel spacing and adaptation requirements

Spacer requirements for all wheels

2.5(1) A wheel spacer fitted to a low volume vehicle between the wheel and hub assembly, other then that fitted as original equipment by a high volume vehicle manufacturer, must:

(a) have a maximum spacing of each wheel away from the hub surface of 20mm; and

(b) be set-screwed or attached by another secure method to either the wheel or hub face; and

(c) Be manufactured from a solid block of suitable material; and

(d) have two machined or die-cast surfaces that are parallel, and contain minimum indentations or irregularities; and

(e) be fitted to ensure the wheel locates snugly over the hub spigot so that the hub carries the weight of the wheel assembly instead of the wheel studs, or where the is a mis-match between the hub spigot and the wheel centre, a close tolerance fit center bore locator must be provided; and

(f) maintain, with the spacer fitted, not less then the minimum required amount of wheel stud or bolt engagement specified in 2.4(4).

So how can floating 5mm spacers be legal?
