20 valve Blacktop and Silvertop mods

Postby Hybridd » Wed Aug 02, 2006 11:33 am

Hi again

Here in South Africa my mates are battling to extract power out of the 20 valve motors for a number of reasons. There is :

-No good degree cams that work
-Head cannot be worked further [gasflowed]
-etc

What mods are you guys running in your 20 valves...?

There is a 20 valve in an AE92 hatch like mine that was stripped bare and ran a 13.9 sec quarter mile at the coast. Is this comparable to your country. What can we do to this motors to extract more performance.

Thanks

Search.

20V has been done to death.
Over and over and over and over.

There are hundreds of different cam choices for 4AGE motors...

Cams are limited in lift because of the size of the buckets. However both 20 valves flow well stock and have little need for massive lift. There are many a good grind for the 20 valve its just a matter of getting a grinder who knows a bit about the 20 valve.

Head can be worked. In the silvertop its mainly matching the manifold (or rebuilding it to downflow) intake port post choke and exhaust port hogging out. Blacktop also has issues with poorly designed port dividers, but a greatly increased exhaust port diameter.

Building an enigne is all about what you want from the engine. You cant just throw a set of components together and hope it will do what you want it to do. My enigne for instance is built for 200hp and that only! In order to make 210hp I would have to reflow the head, change cams, retime the cams, alter compression, construct a new intake manfold and alter the trumpet length. It would give me 210hp but would take a bit of mid range out, and probably make the race car slower.
The answer is Helmholtz!

That is very quick. The fastest I've seen a Blacktop do on the 1/4 was a 14.7 or something like that. To do a 13 is very commendable in my books. I'd say stripping it bare would have helped quite a lot, the LSD would have too. Do you know what ECU he was using? Any idea on how much power it had?
Do you guys not get the two door GT version AE92 Hatch in SA?

Hi Crampy_Yes that 20 valve blacktop is a really good conversion on these hatchbacks of ours as they did not come out standard_its an aftermarket mod_We unfortunately in South Africa never got the beautiful AE92 GT 2 door hatch_I SIMPLY LOVE THAT CAR_Actually we never got any 2 door Toyota in South Africa_AE82/AE92 etc _We got the MR2 but they are imports_I wish I could buy one of these beautiful cars [the 2 door AE92 hatch... :( ]

He was running a Gotech fuel Management system_there was a mention of cams_not sure though_standard ECU just don't cut it... 8)
