Who here has done a manual conversion MIV Supra (Dunn?)

Postby 4000GT » Sat Aug 12, 2006 10:45 am

I am looking at a project Supra (offer accepted on it just waiting on inspection) and was curious about the conversion to manual, anyone done one? Parts list? Can peoiple who have done it reply, I can guess the parts and whats required myself. What gearbox is the "one to go for"? Where would be the best parts source? What parts should I just get new...?

Cheers!

Have done Soarer and Mark 2, which are similar to jza80.
Gearbox to go for is v160 getrag 6spd, but could use R154 or W58 instead.
It mainly depends on if its a turbo or not, and how you intend to drive it!

There are HEAPS of supraforums around with this info, (usually based in oz or the states) or you could try www.soarercentral.com.

Finding the parts will be the hard part, and they're usually very expensive.

You are probably better off finding a manual supra to start with, as the difference in price and hassle finding one will be nothing compared to the expense and hassle involved in finding all the parts to do the conversion!

I am thinking it may be better to impot a 3 twin turbo manual and just just its running gear etc. I have my eyes on an aero top, which dont come turbo manual from what I have seen.

The manual conversion can be a big job, there are a bunch of different ways to do it tho. http://www.supraforums.com is your friend in this matter :)

Im currently manualizing my mkiv with a toughened r154 box (was lucky enough to find one with the right shifter to fit my car). The r154 is also better suited to the auto diff ratios than the v160 (TT 6spd). Im going to run a custom single piece driveshaft.

If you were paying someone to do the job at average labour price, id say it isnt worth it, but if you plan on doing most the work yourself, go for it. The trickiest bit is the work that has to be done to the tunnel to get the manual box to fit.

Were did you source parts? I plan on changing the diff anyways... what did you mean about the "right" shifter?

For an MKIV Supra you will need to get a gearbox with a Remote Shifter which is why you get 3 choices being the W58 which is readily available. R154 which is rare as hens teeth and the V160 which you don't want to know how much they cost...

Oh well thats good news, I dont mind to much about the price, I am used to paying $4000 for gearboxes. I am more worried about the power they will handle, whats the W58 good for in your opinion?

Being prepared to pay $4k for a gearbox is a good thing if you want a getrag! - Ive never seriously looked at buying one myself, but that is the sort of money that you'll need. 8O

as for W58 strength - It'll depend on how you treat it and what clutch you use, but I would say 250rwkw as a ballpark - especially with the torque of a 2j.

Actually looking at a 1UZ as an option not the 2JZ. Will see how I go. I need it to support at least 500WHP. So it sounds like I need a R154?
