4afe to 4age

Postby rettun » Wed Aug 16, 2006 9:40 am

I've got a ae92(i think) corolla wagon, with the 4afe engine, and I was lookin at getting a 4age to put in it.. how much work is involved? cost ect?

Any info/help recomendations would be greatly appreciated guys. thanks :)

I realize I would need a loom ecu ect, so was looking at getting a complete car thats been crashed or something along those lines...

Good on you for looking about doing this.
You might get a few people saying "buy a car with a factory 4age" but I think this is a good intro to a new car enthusiast. It's a fairly straight forward mission and you won't get yourself in too much trouble.

Wiring will take the most thinking (but not too much brainpower really)
Try to get a donor car as you won't have to chase up all the little brackets, sensors, intake ducting and exhaust system pieces.
Also you will get the bigger brakes and rear disk brake setup (don't forget to swap the brake bias valve as well)
Also probably be a good idea to swap the fuel pump over.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

HOW MUCH WORK INVOLVED?
If you are doing it at home with someone helping...
1/2 day to get the engines ready to pull out - remove air intake system, disconnect hoses, fuel and pull engine wiring loom out from inside the car (keep the loom plugged into the engine). This presumes you are doing this to both your car and the donor.
1 day to remove engine and maybe gearbox from both cars and get new engine into your car.
1/2 day to put air intake system, disconnect hoses, fuel and pull engine wiring loom back into your car.
1/2 day for think about and do the wiring.
1/2 day for swearing and thinking that you won't ever get it finished
1/4 for finding you don't have the right tool for something and having to go and borrow/buy it.
Lastly...
1/2 day for driving your repowered car
1/2...all night celebrating your creation.
Total
3 1/4 days to do - 2 weekends really
1 Day to enjoy

COST
You could (I have in the past) pick up a donor car (damaged but still drivable) for about $400 to $600 (smallport 4age fxgt, 20v trueno etc.)
Replace cambelt and idler pulleys maybe $100-$200 (talk to mr revhead)
New filters (oil, fuel, air) $100 tops
Stuff that I can't think of - $200 to $300
So maybe about $1000
HINT - don't be in a hurry to buy your donor car. Good cheap donor cars come up for sale all the time. Don't pay too much for one. Try to get one that will start and maybe drive as well. This means you know it was working before you swapped it to your car!
