Exhaust/muffler q's

Postby Boosted_162 » Thu Sep 14, 2006 1:52 am

Hey guys,
Decided to get the exhaust done on my ST185. Gunna get a 3" mandrel bent from the flexi-back, with probably 1 resonator. Just looking at what options i have for mufflers.

I want something thats quiet (HAS to be legal without a silencer) but i do also want something that looks a bit 'bling' like an RPS style one. RPS is definately out of the question, too loud and they make 3SGTEs sound like tractors.

Ive been looking at cat-back systems like the kakimoto (sp?) and apexi systems for the ST185, but they cost $2kish! Am i able to buy the mufflers seperately from somewhere?

Cheers

I would look into getting a more effective resonator system, and have the typical "big bore" 3" muffler. That way you can have a "legal" exhaust without costing an arm and a leg. If you're using the factory flexi (which I believe is around 2.25") then there's not much point doing the whole 3" exhaust. Flexis are around $300 depending where you shop and what size.

I have a 3" flexi with a typical china made big bore muffler, no resonators, I'll be so screwed on the next WOF.

HTH.

Isnt the flexi 2.5"? Im also planning to get a 3" aussie downpipe later on, but wanna get a CT20B at the same time. And if i need to get an extra reso, thats sweet. I just dont want the typical bad noises that come from cheap ass stainless mufflers

Yeah, well if you're planning to keep that smaller flexi then there's not much point going 3" -> 2.x" -> 3"

The cheapass one is alright, but you've got 4WD right? That's gonna be a pain to stick extra resonators from the lack of room with all that 4WD stuff there, unless you wanna hang it closer to the ground.

I would have thought that a 3" is a bit excessive, be better to go with a 2.5", quieter, cheaper, and you wont get any differance in power gains compared to a 3". (3S's sound SHOCKING with overerly large exhuasts :/)

Errr WTF? 3SGTEs seem to run best with a 3" pipe from what I've seen.

I have 2.5inch mandrel bend exhaust on my ST165, and I thought it would suffice, but you should of heard it on the dyno, it sounded like a massive blower, as in compressed air blower not S/C, similar noise to jet take off, I'm defently changing that to 3inch piping....

Instead of starting a new thread ill just ask here....

I was looking at aussie exhausts. I know quite a few people have had great success with the 3" downpipe (Al etc). Looking at a full system (3" downpipe, front pipe and cat-back), but the price of all 3 is $1800 as of todays currency rate.

I dont doubt the quality at all, but is it worth going for something so much? It has the bonus that its actually designed for the ST185, so will have no hassles fitting.

Also, does the aussie downpipe fit on both the CT26 and CT20B? Plan to upgrade to a CT20B later on, so if they dont fit ill have to order a different one.

Cheers

On my brothers gtt caldina he had a 3" exhaust from the factory downpipe to one N1 style mufflers and it sounded perfect, i didn't think it was excessively loud either.

Hey ben

On my mr2 ive just got pretty mucht the downpipe(cat) into the flexi then a mandrel bend 2 1/2" into a big bore 3" straight through. Isnt that loud and sounds pretty good:)

With celicas though hmmm.... what about a silenced big bore ?

IIRC I had to specify what turbo I had when getting the downpipe. the ct26 and ct20b bolt up slightly differently. But make sure you get it HPC'd in silver for that extra engine bay bling 8)

No, they are different, but you can remove a stud and make it fit. With the GT Fours the hardest bit is going over the rear diff, there isnt a hang of alot of room between it and the body, particularly if you've lowered.
But definately 3", I noticed quite a big difference in top end going to 3" from 2.5".
