Compliance is standard process, every car which is imported into NZ has to go through compliance. It is a basically extensive WOF. Budget yourself ~ $1000 for compliance + rego costs (rego ~244, compliance 250-450, + other expences like pads/rotors etc).

my old car failed compliance on rust in the upper chassis rails . you have to remove the inner guard to see it so i suspect the check is very thorough

They do tend to pull panels etc off, including interior panels to check seatbelt mounts etc...

I can be VERY anal, depending what the "cheap lemon" is will make a big difference to cost...

What type of car is it, year, condition, any damage etc?

yeha just drop it into the complience shop(dont forget to bring them the dereg card) and they will remove allmost all the interior, take the wheels off etc etc and find some insignificant amount of chasse rust that you then have to go and sandblast and repaint
then when you need to replace the brake pads, you have to fill out a page or 2 on info

its a pita, i hope your lemon isnt a REAL lemon, or it will cost your mate a shiteload of money

Peace
