bigport manifold on smallport head?

Postby l1ttle_d3vil » Sat Sep 30, 2006 8:25 pm

ae86 bigport inlet manifold, will this go onto a smallport redtop head, turboed, without causing problems?

im thinking the difference between manifold and head will be an issue, but can anyone who knows what they're talking about actually confirm this?

cheers.

I am doing the same on my AE85, intake manifold bolt up, but they have different port sizes (see below pic) so you need an adpter plate (also see below pic, (made by techno toy tuning)) to adapt the big port intake manifold onto the smallport head, I dont know if this affects the flow but if it does I cant imagine it would affect it much...

hmm how much are the adaptor plates? don't want extra costs if i can avoid it, otherwise ill just wait until a bigport 'ze comes up and bolt everything from my bluetop straight on.

why not just swap the small port manifold round to put the throttle boy to the other end of the manifold like everyone else does? works fine

i can supply an adaptor plate for about $75
it is water cut from 10 or 12mm alloy, has all the mounting holes and dowel holes,

ports are small port (50mm across), it will need die grinding to create a nice taper to line the 50mm ports up to the 65mm ports.

other wise use a small port inlet manifold and have it cut and shut,

Swap the smallport head for a bigport and cash. You'll probably want the bigport for turbo applications anyway.
The answer is Helmholtz!

interesting ideas here. evil_si, if i end up going with bigport manifold on smallport head ill definitely get in touch with you about an adaptor play. sounds alot more reasonable than the previous one!!

im not in any hurry to pick up a gze or anything, so i can wait for a bigport one to come up or something. is there any different between gze and n/a bigport redtop heads?

whats involved with swapping heads over? don't you need to replace the head gasket whenever you take the head off? and if you're doing that arent you better off to get the head plained etc etc too? or is that really only applicable for when the HG has blown? if the process is as simple as changing manifolds or something, and there is no difference (internally/strenght-wise) between the gze and n/a redtop heads then i'll just wait till one of them comes up and swap the heads over.
