Oils $&#$% another clutch plate...

Postby Quint » Sun Oct 01, 2006 1:24 am

Well went for a hard drive over to raglan today, half way through an overtakeing monouver i went from 4rpm over to redline in an instant, massive clutch slippage, yup, its doing it again.

Checked the bellhousing it is suitably wet with oil, wasn't 100% sure it was gearbox oil (didn't smell sulphury) but i doubt it'd be engine oil as the only place that engine oil could get into the bellhousing would be the rear crank seal, which i've replaced recently.

So basically does anyone have any schemetics/workshop manuals of how a W57 or even a W5* goes together so i can take this gearbox out _again_ and pull it apart to put in a new seal and clutch plate :'( unless theres some way of repairing the one thats got oil on it Since i've already thrown out one brand new plate cause it got wet with oil not too keen on dumping another one. Nearly considering putting the auto trans back in >_<

I have once re-used a clutch by washing a clutch in brake cleaner, using a heat gun on it to burn off any residue, giving a quick level sand and then brake cleaner again. Worked fine, but if $ aint a big issue, I'd still replace.
As well as the doing front box seal, make sure the spigot bearing is ok also perhaps?

check the primary shaft also for excessive movement

worn front bearing will cause the seal to leak too, any noise in neutral?

leaking rear mains seem to make a mess on the engine side of the flywheel, dont normally get on the the clutch side.

check breather is ok also if it has one?, that could be a possibility
