1gFE vs 1gGE

Postby $CENSLS1$ » Mon Oct 02, 2006 8:11 pm

Hey people I have read a few bits and peices about how the "FE" is the eco version of the 1G engine range.
I was hoping someone could tell me the MAJOR differences between this engine and the more powerful 1G units. My MarkII runs a 'FE' and I would like to know as much as I can about it.
Also, would it be possible to swap just the head to a more power producing one and would it be worth it?

Any info would be muchly appreciated.
Thanks
Garry

1G-GE is one of the most underrated engines, it resembles somewhat 16V 4AGE (but obviously it is 6cyl). But unfortenately the power difference between FE and GE is minimal. (becuase they stopped making it in late '80, while FE continued till this century, although it obtained VVT and BEAMS sticker, but it is still gutless)

i think the main answer you are looking for is the valve angles.

fe- narrow angle
ge - high angle

Off the top of my head i think the fe is 22 deg and the ge is 60 something??

Fe has cam chain from one cam gear, whereas the ge has two cams directly connected to the cam belt (cos has more room obviously)

I think im correct in saying the ge may also have higher compression ratios?

Think of it this way, you probly already have but hey, its like comparing a 4age to a 4afe. 4afe is good, but not great (some would disagree).

The great thing about either is they have a similar borexstroke aspect to a 4age, and they are actually fuccken great engines, as above, and have great torque spreads when modded, like the 4age. (yes, torque spreads does equal power)

If you compare last 1GGE vs last 1GFE you will find this:
1G-FE DOHC 4+VVT-i 98 1988 160@6200 148@4400 75 75 10.0:1 Altezza
1G-GEU DOHC 4 82-86+ 1988* 160@6400 133@5200 75 75 9.1:1 Crown + most others

Although late 1GFE has advantage of >10 year of development vs GE and VVT makes it possible to for it to produce wider torque curve/more torque at lower RPM while maintaning similar high end power

sorry to jump in on the thread, but why do you say its under rated?

i seem to have heard alot of people talking about 1G engines as though they should be nothing but boat anchors?

borex stroke aspect ratios, head design, size of rods, strentgth of pistons, oil squirters rararararara. As sergei said, its basically a 6 cyclinder 4age. Very under rated, just the 1j is the norm as it is easier to get hold of in good cond

We ran a 1GGZE with a T3 type turbo instead of the S/C for a while.

Was an great car. made fairly decent power.

Problem with them is they are same bore size as a 3K/4K, and so fitting 4 valves into a hole that small means you have very small valves.

Aparantly ( never found out till after we had sold it)
the 1GGE heads also came out in bigport and smallport versions.

I've never seen a 'smallport' or non-TVIS 1G before, i know they exist, but a bit like rocking horse poop.
