I have buddies with each of those swaps, 4ag turbo, ca18det & sr20det.
Either will net you a fun ride that can go stupid fast.
I'd would've like to keep it toyota powered, but a ca18det gets my vote. There are just too many advantages that can't be overlooked vs; a 4/7ag, the fussy 3sgte rwd or the more costly sr. Motor fits nice also.
Check out this forum

and here is a ca18det with hardly anything done to it, just a tick slower than a 10sec full weight street car. Thats very impressive for the minimal resources allocated... hard to beat.

Yeah, I reckon CA18DET is an awesome option for a starlet!

I mean 3S is a PITA to run when you've got to stand it upright (Unless you get an Altezza one, in which case it's a mega PITA with wiring etc)

a 4AGE costs stupid amounts of money for RWD manifolds etc, considering the power output;

2JZG(t)E would make the car a lead tipped arrow, and good for nothing but skids;

Building up a 4k/5k costs heaps for SFA gains;

SR20DET would be sweet, but kind of expensive;

CA18DET can be had for cheap as, has decent power, not too heavy, designed for RWD to start with, it's all good! Only downside is having a non toyota engine in there.
In terms of a well done up classic looking starlet, I dont think you can go past a hotted up 5K or 4K, but if you just want some fun and good power, I think CA18DET is a sweet idea!

CA18 would be my choice too, cheap, compact, revvy, reliable, and you'll get more than enough power to pedal a KP along at deathly quick velocity.

RomanV - nice to see someone else appreciates the might that is the Toyota K-series too 8)

One of my mates little bros was building up a KE20.

He was building up a 5K for it, with cams, carbs, headers, etc, spent a fair bit of cash I think.
And all the while everyone was telling him it's a waste of time, it's gonna suck, get a rotor, get a 4AGE, get a 2TG, etc.

I think he silenced all of his critics when he finished it, including me, as I was skeptical...
It had to be the TOUGHEST sounding old school toyota I've seen, and a K series engine has that time period sort of feel to it, that makes the car so much cooler than a 4AGE or something more modern and high tech like that.

He just wanted a cruiser anyway, and I dont think he could have possibly made that car any cooler, any other way. 8)

I dont think I quite understood what he was trying to acheive with the car at first, but now I realise that a K series was the best possible choice. 8)

so in summary, <3 KPs and KEs. 8)
