Larger swaybars in FXGT

Postby crispy'86 » Sat Oct 07, 2006 8:21 pm

Went out to the track today for the sprint event and found my car's VERY understeery. Has anyone else noticed this same problem? I'm using standard front and rear swaybars for now to learn what the car does. Runnning new gabriel shocks and cobra springs, and standard road tyres. Now i want to sort out the problem one by one so has anyone noticed a huge difference with larger diameter front swaybar??? and similar setup?

If you want to make your car really understeer , then biger front bar is the way to go 8O , I would recomend a bigger rear bar , whiteline probablly make an adjustable one . I have one on my starlet and it makes the handling nice and neutral

"Understeer" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"Oversteer" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"Horsepower" is how fast you hit the fence.
"Torque" is how far you take the fence with you.

You can also make the std one adjustable by welding tags along the top of it with holes drilled every 25-30mm. Easy to adjust and cost is way down on a Whiteline. See what is on the wrecks at the local dump too - the bar on the rear of my AW is off a Pelude of some sort.
See ya

These are the specs of the trd sway bars that were running in my ae101 fx and are now in my ae111 levin. Handling (empty no stereo etc car) is neutral tending to oversteer on the edge, its combined with trd adj coilovers. There is no body roll fanging it full noise around both the front and back tracks at manfield on race tyres, rims. Slap the stereo in the boot and it becomes and oversteering pig of a car,

Front 28.0mm, solid
Spring rate 57% up from standard

Rear 19.1mm, air
Spring rate 27% up from standard

Leon, what rear bar diameter are you using?
My setup is strictly low , low budget till i get used to what the car can and can't do, there's no way i want to splash out getting adjustable suspension and race tyres if my driving is mediocre, setup is just gabriel shocks new 1 month ago, cobra springs all round, I must admit i have yet to get a proper alignment and get the camber setup evenly as i just bolted the suspension in andadjust toe by eye. Yes, it is a bit rough but for a start i have to get used to what the car's bad traits are. Already had 2 off's at ruapuna. one understeer off the track at the hairpin and the other at 90 km/h entering the esses. Oh and i have seen the results of running race tyres when there's a beginner driver in the car. Race slicks + Adjustable suspension + beginner = Huge lose in the esses and rollover.

Sorry, I'm not sure! It has been in the car about three years, so recollection has faded. Can't tell you much beyond that it's the three adjustment whiteline bar.

I'm running 20mm adjustable whiteline in the rear of my Ae82. Is a solid bar as well. Same as what Leon is running = Oversteer on demand. Even more so with less grippy tyres. Makes it swap ends a little easier on you if you make a relevant mistake in the corner.

I think the 82 runs a 16mm hollow bar from factory in the rear. So even the same diameter bar, but solid, and adjustable will provide a decent amount more rigidity even on its lowest setting.

I weas just thinking if i got the 18mm solid bar for a start, as it's cheper and i could try the same thing with 2 original bars, 1 clamped to the other, just for testing it out for theory. Hey it's all about learning isin't it?? :D
and 18mm is bit more cost effective for me if i have to buy one. Or what price are you guys looking at for your rear bars that you don't nee? If it'd fit easily

My whiteline rear bar was about the $300 and some mark as best I recall. This was three years back, so inflation might have kicked in.

Prices for the rear bars i've got so far are $160 plus gst for 18mm std bar and $240 plus gst for adjustable whiteline bar my price through work. Anyone else got anything i could have a play with, modify to fit my fx?? I'm not wanting to purchase a new item just yet but experiment with another one to see difference it makes, is there any noticeable difference with adjustable rear bar and just using standard?? I was thinking of just clamping another std bar to my existing one and see if it remedies my problem/ just see what result i get
