AE92 Hesitation/Surging

Postby Jebus » Tue Oct 10, 2006 8:53 am

In the missus' Smallport Levin, it has massive hesitation and surging while revving, even under quite low load.

Does it most with about 1/4 tank of gas, but isnt too bad with lots of gas or very very little, weve done the fuel filter and every other usual thing. Which only really leaves Fuel pump or possibly a big build up of gunk i nthe bottom of the tank or blocking the filter net on the pump?

Any suggestions on things to try?

ive had dodgy distributor wiring cause my bluetop to hesitate and basically run like a sack of sh*t; or are you sure its fuel-related?

Bungo TPS can cause hunting at idle, and hesitation on acceleration... but not like how you described it.

Dizzy is fine, its been all pulled down etc, this isnt TPS hesitation, its mega, like hitting the limiter hehe, but all the way through the rev range.

only thing I can think of that bad was when my bonnet was sitting too low when it clicked shut, and i didnt have a rubbger cover over the + terminal of my battery so it would earth out on the bonnet occasionally and basically cut power for a split second.

it basically gave the effect of a REAL bad hesitation/surging, it would throw you into the seatbelt and then back into the seat but it wasn't like it lost complete power (with lights switching off etc).

couldn't work out why until someone noticed a burnt patch on my bonnet, right next to the terminal hehehe

not likely (unless you've changed the battery or something maybe) but something else to look at?

my gtz did the same thing sometimes, when it was under 1/4 of a tank and u acelarate the car would go then pretty much stop then go again ect, had 2 use real light throtling. i just thought it was the fuel surging

just found out what was wrong with my car... wasn't anything to do with the water temp sensor...

pulled my spark plugs out and the white part (between where the HT lead attaches and the hex) on the 4th plug was cracked all over the place.
swapped it for another spark plug and its all running mint now

so that was causing the car to surge/hesitate and run like sh*t, but it was only once it had warmed up and also only under 4500rpm.

I'd check the power to the pump too and also reccommend taking th eunit out and insecting it. Won't be good for it if there's gunk in the filter screen for the pump

This is going to sound pretty random and probably won't fix your problem but my old subaru legacy did what you describing (quite an agressive surging) and it was because my altenator was f*&^%$, I changed it and it went fine.

Might be worth checking.
