DIFF AND TRANSFER CASE OIL.

heyas all just wanting to know what diif and transfer case oil i need to put in my st215w caldina auto....wanting to change it and seein if anyone has done it. chur chur

He should have all the Toyota Recommended details there so you'll be able to find out which stuff would be the best for you to use...

What engine oil are you running? I just put Mobil 1 5W60 in mine.

According to the owners manual for a ST246 GT4 Caldina, which as far as I am aware uses pretty much the same running gear as the Tiptronic ST215 I can report the following.

The transfer case and rear diff both use the same gear oil which is listed as "Genuine Toyota Castle Hypoid Gear Oil SX (API GL-5, SAE 90). Both use 0.9L.

The manual also specifies 5W-30 oil for the 3S-gte. I personally use Total quartz 9000 5W-30 which is availble for a very good price if you can find it.

Any other questions that may be answered by the owners manual feel free to ask although most other things are just listed as Toyota genuine xxxxxxxxx.

but to be perfectly honest i wouldnt imagine just oil would have caused that?

Yep, when they specify an oil, they do it for a reason, just have a look at my old civic hondamatic paddock racer, may it rest in peace

He went to Giltrap Toyota earlier in the week and they told him to use the same gearbox oil for the transfer case as apparently it's all one unit... :lol:

I actually don't know about the kind of boxes the Caldinas use or what the older types were. I just know it is not the case with the Caldina box as I've seen Jasons' (TOYWGN) engine/box etc.

He actually had to walk the Toyota guy (Parts Manager) outside to his car/pop the bonnet and show him. This is after the guy aparently looked it up in the EPC.

Arrh ok. My old corolla had an E55 box. It had a bung on the transfer box and the gearbox but you only accualy filled the gearbox. Either that or the transfer case had no oil for 20 thousand k :lol:

st215 manual doesnt have a seal between the transfer case and gearbox...

centre diff is actually in the gearbox. transfer case is just a 90deg bevel gear like a diff in reverse.

so power goes through centre diff, out side of gearbox, through the viscous type coupling into the 90deg drive and out the back.

also the transfer case has an oil drain, but i cant see a seperate fill bung


so on manuals, yeah lt looks like they take the same oil as the gearbox

But with Auto gearbox it should be separate, no way you can have GL1/2 Oil in it and run that hypoid gear for very long.
