Making gbox cross member/engine mounts

Postby RomanV » Mon Oct 23, 2006 10:32 pm

Okay now given my choice of gearbox in my carina, I wont have a bolt in solution anymore.
(Altezza 6 speed, instead of my original plan of going W57)

I'm more than likely going to need to make custom engine mounts, and a gearbox cross member.

Obviously these need to get certed etc, but what's the situtation with making these myself?

I mean... Do I just pick any material, any design, and make them up and hope that an engineer likes them? Or is there a certain manner/method I should go about this?

Obviously I'd make them on the beefy side just to be safe, I'd rather not have my engine/gbox falling out at 150kph around taupo or something, haha.

Would I be better off getting existing RWD mounts for the aforementioned and modifying them perhaps?
I'm sure I could source an Altezza gbox cross member, and engine mounts if necessary.

Any help/advice/etc appreciated!

I got an existing Gbox X-member and simply machined myself up two steel plates out of ~8mm low carbon steel and sandwiched it between xmember and chassis. The front hole of the xmember fitter the rear hole on the chassis, so the brackets bolted onto the back hole and front hole of the xmember and extended to the front hole on the chassis to remove any leverage or fatigue that may occur on the steel.

Havn't had any problems with it. No sight of creep, fatigue or work hardening which was my main concern, brittle failure for the lose.

Hope that helps with any ideas you may have,

Yep you can just use standard box section steel or the like

You can strengthen it with ribs and webs, etc

Get catalogues for free which has all the specs to work out the stresses.

Box section is good because you can angle it easily by cutting an even angle and butt welding together.

If you come around to my place ill show you some custom mounts on the lada.
