Faulty throttle position sensor symptoms

Postby FrEsH » Thu Nov 02, 2006 6:40 pm

What would you expect to happen if your throttle position sensor was broken/faulty?

High idle RPM even when idle control is all the way in? loss of power? Searching Revs? Sort of like an auto when its coldish and even a little when its warm in the fact that you let the clutch out and it accelerates by itself with ur foot completely off the accelerator...

Curious as my car is exhibiting all tehse symptoms and its been suggested to me it may be the TPS....its a Starlet GT btw..thanks

Usually if its adjusted wrong it'll be horrible on very lgiht throttle, quite jerky. Check its getting a good 5V power supply, good earth and the voltage on the signal wiring is changing as you open and close the throttle (key on, engine off) and also check for fault codes. Could be AFM/MAP sensor fault too. Check codes first though

yeah you count the flashes on the dash, do a search on google theres quite a few websites that explain how to read the codes and what they translate into.

those problems could point to a faulty TPS, it would be a lot of other things though but thats where i'd be looking first.

yeah faulty TPS sux! Happened to my ae86 before and the car is soooo gutless.. Also with faulty TPS, you are very likely not able to get real reading on your timing.. they will be like 30+ something.. instate of around 16... without shorting out the pins.

Hmmm both my gf's 20v and my brothers gt starlet have the same symptoms!

I've tried leads and plugs, but still to try coil and tps or even distributor.
