rotating turbos

Postby l1ttle_d3vil » Sat Dec 16, 2006 4:31 pm

ive got to rotate the turbo ive got here, but not sure which set of bolts to loosen...
pretty sure I was told at some point its the ones on the right, but not sure. ive unbolted them but it doesnt seem to want to rotate anything...

looks more like it'd be the set of bolts on the left (4 of them all together), can someone confirm this for me?? don't want to force anything wouthout knowing what its gona do!

cheers.

Do you need to rotate the core or do you just need to rotate the compressor housing, coz it could be either.

Bolts on the left are for rotating the core, but it will be mega tight, may need to get some heat in there to get it loose. Same deal for compressor housing, will be tight as hell, but should come free with some effort.

oh sweet, either of them really. just gota see how everything lines up, might start with the compressor housing first seeing as that'd be the easiest ... and I dont have a gas torch handy

thanks for that.

When you rotate the compressor housing like that in some cases you might struggle to get the wastegate actuator to fit back onto the housing, as the holes they were originally bolted to are now in a different position but this is easily fixed by drilling new ones. This could be different in your case but thought id let you know anyway.

hmm well i rotated the core piss easy, but cannot get the compressor housing to turn at all. any special tricks to it?? ive got the core where I need it, but need to rotate the compressor housing so it doesnt hit the oil filter and also so the actuator fits, as you said...

Have you tried tapping the back of it with a rubber hammer?

got it now, the whole compressor housing came off in the end

took a hell of a lot more force than the core of it though...

That's weird, my VF10 was the opposite. The compressor cover came off sweet as, but the core was a nightmare to rotate.

Then, I ended up getting a new exhaust manifold and the turbo needed to be top mounted again, so what a waste to time

yeah I got both loose by hand in the end, but it took two of us for the compressor housing - one holding a bar through the flange studs and me twisting the housing...

how important is it to have the turbo mounted on the right angle? the compressor housing comes pretty close to the oil filter but if its on an angle as pictured below its fine. the pic below would be worst case scenario, i could level it up quite a bit more than this probably.
is this going to cause problems with the oil drain or anything like that?? im guessing it wont, but im no expert on turbos

U were lucky, usually on the IHI turbos the exhaust housing rusts to the CHRA and u need to heat the ex housing to red hot and bash the shit out of it. with an angle like that u may have thrust washer wear problems. probly ok

Very imortant, with the turbo at this angle, the oil will build up in the bearing housing and cause it to leak out the turbine end ring.
the turbo should be dead level...

good point...how dead is "dead level"? will it be sweet to just set it up by eye? should be able to get it pretty level and just clear the oil filter

You should still buy that manifold off me and chuck ya VF10 on that. It'll fit up sweet and the turbo will be sitting at the right angle for the drain to work sweet.

i was waiting for you to get back to me with the dimensions etc of it!

got this one sussed now anyway. i found a stainless manifold on trademe, bling bling y0 and for a real good price!
its just a side-mount manifold and setup for a t25 turbo though but some easy mods will soon fix that up, just looking at different ways around it.

will I run into problems if I stuck with the t25 flange on the vf10 turbo? im not worried around the stud pattern, that can be fixed. my main concern is the difference between the outlet of the manifold, and the inlet of the turbo. heres a pic of the t25 flange gasket over the vf10 flange, its only a minor difference.
will it effect performance much? just might be easier if I dont have to cut the whole flange off...

do the bolts need to be torqued to a specified value, once the core or housing are rotated?
