5k running problems

Postby scope » Mon Dec 18, 2006 9:36 am

hey

just got my 5k in my ke36 but have run into problems

it runs but runs real rough. i have done the timing to tdc, when it revs it revs real smooth like it's all fine but if i keep my foot down to keep it running then it sounds like it's missing and everything. also it is very hard to get it to rev when it's under 3000rpm

it has a mild cam but i don't know the specs of it or if this will affect anything

it also used to turn over extremely slow but then my starter motor blow up so i'm assuming that was the starter motors problem not anything to do with the engine

thanks for any help

I had a similar problem with my ST185. The engine would free rev smoothly but as soon as I put load on the engine it ran like crap, in fact, it sounded just like a WRX. The engine barely produced any power when it was misfiring like that so it was rather difficult to drive and smoke from engine bay and exhaust. However if I kept the engine at higher revs like above 3000 it would run ok.

It was suggested to me that it was the spark plugs so I replaced them and the car ran nicely again for about 30km then it started to crap out and eventually went back to how it was.

Anyway, after further inspection I noticed there was a big air leak in the breather pipe from rocker cover. Also the rocker cover itself was leaking oil. The end of the air control valve (on P/S pump) that connects to the pipe going to the intake manifold was broken off. So basically I had 2 vacuum leaks in the intake system, one before the turbo and one after.

So I fixed all of these problems plus cleaned up the spark plugs (as they were fouled) and I've done over 150km of problem free (except for a minor idling problem) driving since.

It might be as simple as a vacuum leak so carefully inspect the engine for them. They can be very sneaky as in my case on the P/S pump. Also check how you spark plugs are doing.

Sorry for telling my life story but I just thought it was necessary

i can't get it to idle, won't stay alive under 3000rpm (i know this from using the choke and trying to leave my foot on the gas)

and to the other post, yeah i changed spark plugs as well. and i blocked up some vacuum lines off the intake manifold as well. i didn't do the one ontop of the tappet cover as i'm pretty sure you can still run the car fine with it open

correct me if i'm wrong?

you can but its not best to but you need the one with the PCV valve conected

im starting to think by what your saying its in fact a air leak not a timeing problam

id be checking float level & that the jets ant blocked also the idle mixture

My car did exactly as you described the other day although I'm not sure if it helps, have you checked tappets?

Yeah I didn't feel the need to check em either but felt like a right dick when that was the only problem and I was going. "Nah it won't be them!"

^^^Check the idle stop solenoid. Just unplug the wire to it and if it idles that would be your problem.

Yeah if you've had the inlet manifold off then did you change the gasket?

If you block the breather on the rocker cover it will pressurise the rank case and it will stall.
Try running your timing at 15deg BTDC, thats where I used to run mine with a bigger cam.
Also try the idle screw 2 turns out for a start.
