Please look and Help!! Turbo Issues??

Postby KE25-KP30 » Fri Jan 26, 2007 7:02 pm

Hey,
I hope someone can tell me where to start looking and maybe point me to what's gone wrong.
The car's an EP71 Starlet turbo, CT12, bit more boost etc.
The situation: The car had no air filter when I got it, so today, I put a temporary UNI filter on it (The oilable type), and at the same time, did an oil change (Put Penrite 20W-60 and new filter), did all the usuals, started it, topped it up etc. and also (This may be important) There are 2 breather hoses off the cam cover. One goes to intake manifold, and other to factory filter. The filter one was just going to atmosphere, oiling all the engine bay so I stuck a bolt in it :?
Anyway, went to drive home, came to the first corner, looked out the back to see white/grey smoke. I pulled over and popped the bonnet.
When I give it a few revs, it smokes tonnes. So I thought, hmm, maybe the filter's letting oil into the engine, pull the filter off, still smokes. So then, maybe that breather has something to do with it. I popped the bolt out, and WHOOSH, all this air comes out(The engine's off by now) and buildup??(slime) goes all over my hand.
Drove SLOWLY back to the workshop, not very far, and turned it off, and went inside and opened the door, came out, drove it in, and I give it a few revs, and I don't seem to see any smoke (Not great clouds anyway) and it's still got oil.
It seems quite like the time a TX3 Turbo of mine blew, but only that was continuous smoking. The turbo has very minimal play and still spins freely(Or freely enough)
Sorry for the long windedness, but I thought anything could be important. If you've got to here, thanks :)

Hopefully in all the toyota buffs on here, someone will know what i've done/what's happened!!

Any comments on what it could be, what to look at, check out etc etc would be much appreciated as I'm supposed to be driving the starlet up to auckland to live mid next week so need to get onto it.

Cheers again,
Kent

I had one of these starlets once and that little oil line that comes off the rocker cover and goes to the filter is a pain in the arse it fed oil straight into the intake of the turbo causing it to blow smoke. Try runnin that pipe into a catchcan type thing so it is able to breath but if it leaks oil it will leak into the can. just do a cheap type like little oil bottle or something along those lines to trial it out first. It might be plumbed into your filter for a reason so maybe puttling a bolt in it isnt the best idea let it suck atmosphere. Did you maybe overfill the oil? I did that and it blew abit of smoke. Check you intercooler pipes for traces of oil? Just threw a bunch of ideas that might help.

Oh and one more thing the line that goes from your rocker cover to your intake manifold could also be feeding oil straight in. So maybe try isolating those pipes off into a catch can. Anyone feel free to correct me if im wrong in anyway. just my 2c

If you blocked the breather you would have built up a crazy amount of pressure in the crank case....

You lucky you havn't blown the crank seal out of the block...

It could be as simple as the pressure pushing past the rings and pushing oil into the bores.

You said its stopped now?

Leave the breather open for now and take it for a drive and see what happens.

Haha, yeah, that's it I think.
I started it up again later and there was pretty much no smoke so I think it's all good!!
Cheers for that, maybe I'l do some sort of a catch can to stop the oil going all over the place.

Cheers again.
