chassis rigidy vs cornering ability on uneven road

Postby Psycho_Dad » Wed Jan 31, 2007 10:15 pm

ok heres the idea

on an uneven road surface(ie most of nz roads) is it best to have a chassis that isnt completely rigid in order to get the best cornering out of the vehicle?? my theory is that since the chassis flexes, it would assist each corner of your suspension in working 'independantly' on oppose to a rigid chassis which would be like having a solid rear axil

im applying this specifically to cars that have independant suspension on all 4 corners, but am curious to how it would effect other options

any thought through thoughts would be appreciated

Peace

a rigid chassis gives you a solid base to work from
with springs and shocks you can "tune" them
thats harder to do with a whole chassis

Exactly.

most of the time you aim to get the chassis as solid as possible, so there is no flex at all.
That way you can adjust your suspension settings to suit the given conditions as you can control them.
Cant control or predict chassis flex.

Dad spent almost 6 months full time with ford in oz doing cages design's and testing with the BA's to eliminate chassis flex.

And do you realise how adjustable suspension is now days?

There's 4 way adjustable shocks, and that just IN the shock,
before you do camber, castor, toe, bump steer, spring rate, ride height,
sway bar stiffness, roll centre etc etc.

The less flex in the chassis the more accurate you can be with your suspension settings.
