Random thought re: cam timing

Postby strap-on » Sun Feb 11, 2007 5:46 pm

So i was reading this site i found by following a link in the faq's and the guy says as a general rule of thumb advancing the cam gives better bottom end and retarding gives better top end.

so say you had done mods that get you mainly better top end but inevitably lose a bit at the low end (eg new cams) could you advance the cam timing slightly in order to compensate, i know it would slightly take away top end power but if this means a smoother power curve it could be worth it?

or are my theories just screwd

I would guess that cam timing and power bands will be more specific to the cam profile and head design than a broad statement like that.

i.e. It may work on some engines, and the reverse may work on others.

also you should really decide on where you want your power, and plan your mods around that. Otherwise it's similar to saying "I'll get some 280degree cams for the top end, then put a 1" exhaust on there for good velocity at low revs". :)
