Belts on 4agze

Postby AE82 FXGT » Sun Feb 18, 2007 4:15 pm

Today I figured I would change all the belts on my car as one of they were noisey as. All the belts weren't in the greatest condition and were probably well over due.

I loosened the tensiuon of the supercharger belt easy using the tensuioner to the left of the crank pulley.

The other tensioner (top right to the crank pulley) won't loosen off. I can't get a socket of any sort in there, regular spanners won't fit, and the offset ring spanner I have keeps slipping (14mm) and now the bolts rounded off. I tried using vicegrips as a last resort but that just striped the nut more.

The other bolt that actually moves the pulley is fine, but just unwinds when loosening it rather that moving the tensioner.

Does anyone have any ideas??

hacksaw it off, then sort it out once its out of there.

If the bolt is THAT rounded that you can't get it with vicegrips, you don't have many options....

That bolt is just a locking type bolt, so grind/cut the head off, then wind the adjusting bolt all the way out so you can take the pulley out of the engine bay, remove the rest of the bolt, and put it back together.

Otherwise, try again with vicegrips on tighter, or if u can weld a rod to the nut head and undo it (but if u can get a socket on there, i doubt you can do that.

I couldn't really fit a hacksaw in there, I might try vicegrips again tomorrow.

You have to loosen off the pully for the tentioner to move, not just ajust the tentioner bolt.

he knows that. Thats the botl he can't undo.

You might have to use a hacksaw blade.

And yup, it will take you hours :)

Yeah we're on the same page.

Looks like I'll try hacksawing the nut of then.
I tried looking for a 6pt (single hex) offset 14mm spanner, but can't find one anywhere.

How do you mean?
I've taken out the bolt that moves the pulley.
I also tried the vicegrips again further rounding, I then got frustrated and tried using a chisel too, so the nut is well and truly f*cked.
I also can't fit a hacksaw in there to saw it off either.

Borrow a air hammer with a longchisel bit, and just cut the head off it.

tried either just the hacksaw blade, or even the smaller 'mini hacksaw' blades.- if you can get vice grips onto it, should be able to get one of them in there.
will take some patience, but would get there slowly.
Cant believe im still a member here.

The problem is that the vicegrips can only hold half the nut, thats why it keeps slippng off. The nut itself is recessed into the pulley so a ahcksaw would only cut half the nut off.
I tried fitting it behind the tensioner but thats flush with the bit that holds it on.

I know the bolt you mean & have had the same issue. Good luck getting a hacksaw blade in that gap! In the end i took the whole bracket that holds the tensioner pulley off. This is a bitch of a job because you need to remove the aircon, alternator and PS pump to get the bracket off. Took maybe an hour or so.

Once i had it off i could easily loosen the bolt. Once back on, i tightened it best i could with one of those angles spanners. Been going fine for ages now.

yea that sounds like the most annoying option but it will be the best option.

Gutted, so just unbolt the bracket that holds the pumps, I can leave them all plugged in and just support them with something correct?

I was looking at that option but hoped that there would be an easier way, ah well, suppose I'll get to work on that this weekend.

Yeah I've seen them, they have a little loop for the nut to sit in and a cold chisel type bit that you screw into it.
Good idea but won't sit over the whole nut.

Hmm. I've started taking the bracket that holds the tensioner off.

I disconnected the alternator and unbolted it.
I think I have unbolted the power steering pump.
And I'm not sure how to unbolt the aircon pump.

Firstly, How many bolts hold the powersteering pump on? I've undone the bolts that tension it and undone one more on the other side is this it? It seems to be still pivoting on something though, but I can't find anymore, is it just being held on there by the friction from the bracket?

Secondly are there four bolts for the ac pump? I've undone the two bottom ones, and can see the top right hand one. But can't see any others, and I don't want to go undoing any old bolt.

And finally how many electrical connectors ane there?
The alternator not an issue.
I see two on the aircon pump but one big one and another one.
Is there any on the powersteering pump?

From there I just need to undo the bolts that actually hold it onto the block.

Thanks

p/s
no wires
1 pivot bolt and the tensioner bolt, quite tight so use a screwdriver to lever it off
