The great thing about Toyota is that loads of bellhousings will bolt to the gearbox you have.
Start with a later R type motor.... easy/quick/cheap.
But options (with the right bellhousing) could be:
- Y not
- S incl turbo
- G bit short on bang for buck
- M an oldie but a goodie
- JZ bit of a trick finding bellhousing
- UZ see above but nothing some $ won't fix
Then there are diesel options.

My mate repowered his hilux with a 5M 2.8 litre twincam. Runs only on LPG... simplifies things a bit really. Sounds fantastic!

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

chers for the help guys but wat would be the cheapest option? iv thought about sticking a rota in it but then u got other things to modify. i want a engine with more then 80 hp lol the engine that is in it just does not cut it. and also having a 4 speed colum change is streight annoying would it be hard to change to a floor shift?

if its the same as an 81 you just un bolt the panel in the floor cut out the vinal & bolt in the floor shift

the best option for quick & easy is an R serier motor they bolt straight in with off the shelf engin mounts & can come alot bigger than what you have now

Putting a Rotary in it is NOT a cheap option.

Hahahaha - are you saying not cheap because of the cost of install, the cost of gas or the cost of repairing it when it s#!ts itself? (or a combination of all 3)

yeah put a rota in it..

(Is it just turbo rotors that eat apex seals, or ported ones? Mine and dads have had the shit kicked out of them for years, and missed a beat, 10,000rpm+ launches, etc)

Rotors are fine... provided theyre not built in some rangy old bastards back yard. Seen plenty live, and plenty die. But if the same bastard built a toyota engine, would it last long either?

Are you a mechanic or a fabricator?

If answer = no, then just put the same motor back in as you're taking out.

rotary would be awesome and love the sound but so much stuff would have to be changed right? and how much money would it really add up 2? so far im thinking of just a more modern r engine and finish painting it then sell it . but im not sure, still considering my options would a rotary engine need the fire wall modified to fit in?

Rotaries (n/a) are relatively simple to install, wiring is easy, you'd just need to fab up engine/gearbox mounts, and a custom driveshaft, and you're away.

The only downside to putting in a rotary, is that these days people want ridiculous amounts of money for them. Reliability is entirely up to you, as was said, backyard building and lack of maintenance leads to their bad reputation for reliability, but get a good one, look after it, and it'll last years.

Another good (cheap!) option mentioned above would be the Starion single-cam 4G63 turbo, they're reasonably easy to come by, quite cheap, have reasonable power, and being a mitsi mechanic yourself, no doubt you'd know all about them! You'd still need to go custom mounts, driveshaft etc, but you're gonna have to do that anyway if you're heading away from R motors..
