GT4 Transmission swap

Postby wmorrison1967 » Wed Feb 28, 2007 2:33 pm

I would like to know if a manual tranny from a Caldina GT-T(ST215) can be fitted to a Caldina GT4 (ST246W)? If it can where could I locate one?

Peace...

AFAIK it hasn't been discussed properly before, though it was asked in this thread which just degenerated into a name calling bitch fest, so searching in this case is probably a waste of time. Bum steer on the part of the "use the search" nazis

Anything is possible, depends on how much time/money you have. Some of it might be a simple bolt up operation, but there is a lot more to it than just bolting the gearbox up (which is probably the easiest part). Biggest issue might be the foot operated parking brake which is right where the clutch needs to go.

The gearbox will fit on the motor no problem, and as the ST215 auto uses the same transmission I'd guess it will fit in the car ok. Unfortunately nobody has tried this yet so it may not be as expected. Rather than looking for very rare ST215 parts I'd suggest getting a ST205 wreck and using those parts instead.

As far as the rest of it goes, you'd have to get an ECU from a manual ST215, or go for an aftermarket ECU (which would be the better option anyway). It might be possible to fool the stock ECU into thinking there is still an auto slush box there, but I don't like your chances with the TRC/VSC system.

Also you'd need the pedals/clutch cylinder and pipes, provided there is room for them between the engine and the firewall, and the brake booster doesn't get in the way, otherwise you're up for more expense in custom fabrication. Shifter and cables will probably need to be custom made or at the very least adapted from the ST205/215, you could probably adapt the handbrake as well.

I'd estimate it would cost around $5-10k to do this job properly. Maybe a little bit less if you did it all yourself.

And how did your post help in any way?

If you have no knowledge then resist the temptation to hit that post button just for the sake of it. That's what's wrong with the tech forum, people can't help but put their 2c worth in, and in a lot of cases it isn't even worth 2c

Thanks much. This is the type of information I need. One of the differences between the ECUs for the ST215 and ST246 is the set tiptronic in the latter.
