Colder plugs for a high comp 4age

Postby ChaosAD » Thu Mar 15, 2007 7:53 pm

Ive bumped the compression on my bluetop up to 11:1 and am going to add some wild cams.
What are your guys reccomendations for plugs? I need to go at least one heat range colder, but at $80 a set I wana get it right.
and should I go iridium, platinum, or otherwise?

Thanks

I just go with the heat range to suit but in copper plugs

heaps cheaper and just change em more often. new plugs are always good

I'm just using standard cheap plugs in mine and it's 11.5:1. Haven't changed them in over 7000KM and it still runs fine.

Taken from the NGK website

With modified engines (those engines that have increased their compression) more heat is a by-product of the added power that normally comes with increased compression. In short, select one heat range colder for every 75-100 hp you add, or when you significantly raise compression. Also remember to retard the timing a little and to increase fuel enrichment and octane. These tips are critical when adding forced induction (turbos, superchargers or nitrous kits), and failure to address ALL of these areas will virtually guarantee engine damage.

On my bluetop it increased torque nearer the bottom of the rev range, it also made the car much easier to drive around on the road. It didn't seem to affect the peak power figure though.

True, I went to the shop and they had platinum plugs listed as the standard replacements :? They were dearer than the iridium.

Copper plugs is what im after, so ill just try another dealer. One heat range sounds like all I need.

Bump in compression made it guttless as I had to retard the timing so much when using the standard ecu for ignition.but a high compression is needed to counter the large overlap in the cams im putting in.

Just ask for the copper equivalent of the platinum plug they detailed and 1 heat colder. It may not be listed in their books but its easy to work out which one is correct

I've found NGK lists all 4ages/gzes as taking platinums.
But yeah I always use the copper equivalent and change them more often.
