cambelt / waterpump stuff

Postby AE82 FXGT » Sun Mar 25, 2007 3:57 pm

Hey guys,

I'm in the middle of doing my waterpump/cambelt etc.
The water pump I got (TGP) for my gze has two bits to it, the bit with the impeller and another bit that it connects to which looks like it has an inlet and outlet and two studs on it.
All the other waterpumps I have done (aftermarket) have only had the outer bit (with the impeller exposed).

Do I just unbolt that bit and do them like I have done in the past or do I somehow fit this bit too?

One more thing, the timing gear that the crank runs, is that just keywayed?
I'm trying to do the oil seal behind it and it's putting up a bit of resistance.

the easy way to get a oil seal(ive read this never done it)
is to screw a screw into the seal then pull on the screw.

Dont put a screw in, you dont want to damage the face that runs against the seal. Small lever bar/screwdriver/seal pick/lots of swearing would be better

The crank pulley should just pull off, they can be a b*tch though. Might have to find a puller (assuming its got threaded bits in it)

The pump you can do the whole lot, but if you haven't got the four O rings for the inlet and outlet and by pass pipe, you might be better off leaving it if it's not leaking and just do the front half.

I've got a set of seal picks so thats sorted, I know not to damage the sealing faces. But it's the timing gear (not crank pulley, thats off) thats being a bitch.

Zak - The pump came with two big o rings, one small one and a metal gasket. Is that all you need?

And if pry bars dont work you will have to tap a couple of m6x1 threads so a puller can be used, had to do this with two gzes in the past.

there is one key for the crank gear and front dampner, the seal will just pop out with a small screwdriver, pop it out between the seal and housing not between crank and seal.

you can re use the rear housing just replace the seal between the block and or it will leak for sure

You might need to get another small one for the small by pass pipe, but you should be ok with what you have.

Also, does anyone know how to check the clearances in the cams?
I'm putting bluetop cams in and I'm not sure how to check them, I know they use shims but don't know what the clearances are supposed to be.

Yes, its the only way to get it off if its tight, you have to use quite long bolts, and make sure you have a fair bit of thread into the gear or they will just keep pulling out.

to check valve clearances, just get opposite cyls rocking and check opposite cyl on the same plane.
1 rocking set 4, 2 rocking set 3 and visa versa

I got the timing gear off. Just gently levered it.

I know when to set the clearances, I just don't know what to set them too/ how to install the shims.

And how exactly do you get at the back of the water pump?
I don't have to take my supercharger off do I?
