4AGZE idler pulley replacement

Postby pidge » Sun Apr 22, 2007 11:50 pm

I'm looking down the barrel of (yet another) expensive repairs on the 4AGZE in my Levin. Nothing particulary suprising, but in the category of "needs to be done to prevent Really Bad Things Happenning".

The last time that supercharger belt was replaced, there wasn't one availble (the previous one has been damaged by an oil leaking from the $15 oil pressure sender - which costs shed load of labour to replace...), and as a result of the necessary tension, the idler pulley is threatening to go - it's whining about it already.

However, TNZ retail price is $329.15 an idler pulley. Now, presumably simply replacing the bearing is somewhat more sensible. Anyone know of a suitable replacement bearing? A cheaper, just as reliable substitute? Or have a spare idler pulley so that an appropriate bearing can be matched?

Oh, anything else I should have done? The clutch is one thing I have in mind - the current one has 97000km on it. I'm reluctant to have a OD pulley on - lead foot and all that :) - even though it would be simple to do while belts and crank are accessible. Water pump overhaul perhaps?

Thanks for any suggestions in advance.

Running a 14psi pully on the mr2 the oem idler pulley eventually siezed, I replaced it with a modified tensioner pulley for the 4agze. (cut the tab for the pre load spring off) and packed it out from the bracket with a 3mm think washer, no complaints yet and it's been on for a few months now, been through a trackday and a days worth or Meremere.

Before that I had tried to make my own pully turned up a piece on a lathe and pressed some ngk bearings into it... under full load it parted from the bearings :S .. i say parted, but going by the noise it made it may have dissentergrated.
