GTT Caldina No Boost/Noise from exhaust side of turbo

Postby bubz » Thu Apr 26, 2007 1:51 am

Hi everyone,I am hearing a Loud Low Pitch Whistling noise from engine bay.The car stopped boosting and as if it had taken so much load when I try to accelerate. The noise is not so noticeable when idling. As soon as you press the speed and hit around 1600-2000 rpm the noise just gets louder and louder. You can still gain rev but the car won't go any faster.Huge drop in performance.

I have taken the intercooler out and the turbo intake end seems to be fine(blowing air to IC).However, this noise seems to be from exhaust side of the turbo.

No major mods in the car except for a Hybrid Electronic Boost Controller with own pressure sensor,an aftermarket BOV and a HKS pod intake(direct replacement for GTT factory air box with some mods for cold air).

Boost always set at 0.5 bar.

What has gone wrong?Need some suggestions before I take it to Manukau Toyota for diagnosis.

Any help or advice will be highly appreciated. Thanks

Similar thing happened to my friends skyline. We couldnt figure it out, no boost and nasty noises. Turned out the exhaust turbine wheel had disintegrated. Always possible with ceramic turbines.

The GT-T Turbo is a steel wheel. However it's still possible that the shaft may have broken. Though that is unlikely, given that the turbo is still blowing air :?

are all the joins on the intercooler piping done up properly? are any of the pipes plastic? check the joins and look for cracks in any plastic piping.

Done a thorough visual inspection of the entire engine bay, couldn't find anything being worn out or loose joints. The idling, gear changes even using Tip is all perfect.

When you accelerate the vehicle moves like a truck on full load going uphill with that noise getting louder as rev increases.

Blocked/collaspsed Catalytic Converter?

Or perhaps something to do with your oil leak that you posted in viewtopic.php?p=564823

The oil leak was only in small amount and it has been fixed.I constantly check my oil level as I don't have a gauge,so I doubt if my negligence for oil level had caused this.

Can you please explain further as to what could have caused the Catalytic Converter to collapse/block?Is it hard work to open the exhaust side of turbo and have a look inside?

If the Cat is blocked will I still get the emission from mufflers?Had a bit of white smoke when I started the car in the morning but nothing once it heated up.

Got my appointment for Monday with Manukau Toyota.

Have you taken the manifold cover off and had a look at the manifold? Could just be the manifold wraped so badly that the exhaust gases are just rushing out. Its a common problem on the gt-t's.

If you have a wastegate, maybe its open all the time, same goes if you have a actuator instead of a wastegate. Could also be the gaskets have had enough.

The noise tells me that its exhaust gases leaking, which is why your car isn't boosting.

Yes,I did.The manifold is not cracked. No gas leak either. How do I test my actuator to see if its working properly?

Remove the vaccum hose which goes to the actuator, be careful though, as you will be running infinite boost, if the problem was your actuator. I will have a look at my oldmans gt-t tonight.

Problem won't be the wastegate, even fully open that will just limit boost to 0.5Bar, so it would be the same as before the problem.

Check the turbo is ok. I have seen more than one GT-T where the compressor wheel nut has come off. One signature range car has hda the turbo replaced twice due to similar issues.

That rod thing coming out of the actuator does move back and forward when I try doing it manually. Can also feel the tension from the spring.

With aftermarket boost controller the factory solenoid has been blocked so what other vaccum lines are connected to the actuator if this is not the one. There is one that connects to turbo and actuator and this is where I got my aftermarket solenoid. Can it be my aftermarket boost solenoid that has give up?

I see a small amount of soot around the head and the manifold where that missing bolt is(manifold issue in GTT's).Should that cause such a loud noise and no boost? The manifold still not cracked, why the massive drop in performance? :?

Really need to take that Cat thing out and have a look at the exhaust side of the turbo before I take it to Toyota.

Already looking for aftermarket turbo and manifold as possible upgrade.

Just pulled the turbo & manifold out.The turbine has about good 4mm play side ways(L-R or R-L).The exhaust side turbine has 6/10 fins bent towards the inside. The intake side fins have started to wear due to this side to side play.It is rubbing against the walls when it spins.

What could have caused this?

What would be better for me,go aftermarket or rebuild this turbo as my manifold is still good?

When you say it got 4mm of sideways play, do you mean radial or axial play?

Radial play is when you grab the end of the turbine and move it up and down, left and right around the radius of the shaft. Axial play (end float) is where you can move it in and out of the housing along the axis of the shaft.

Radial play in the bearings could cause the bent fins and the wear in the housing and would be caused by worn bearings. Axial play might also cause similar symptoms, but other than a loose nut I can't think of a cause for this.

I'd say axial play,Fivebob. The turbine is moving in and out of the housing.
Actually no wear to the housing yet, just the fins.

Can you think of reasons why the bearing has worn out so that I can be more cautious next time?

How much will it cost to get this fixed or a new T&M is the only solution?

Thanks

probably better to go for a custom new manfold and t3/4 turbo

the housings will be scratched and worn if it has 4mm play.

the thrust washer would have failed, generally from lack of oil or dirty oil, other wise compressor surge and backfeeding chchchch noise will make the compressor nut unwind and disintegrate

sh*t can that happen?? a mate just lost boost with his Tdo6 in a wrx, the nut had come undone and was sitting in the housing, we were scratching our heads to hell the hell it happened, I think he has a crap ssq bov also and gets comp surge also

cool, ill mention that to him to him tonight :D

Damn that is a major issue. I thought it was something small like a exhaust leak or something. There is no point in going back to the factory setup again, you might as well go for an aftermarket setup which wont have the manifold wraping problem. Having an aftermarket manifold will also increase your chances of having different turbos. None of this single cast manifold-turbo kaka.
